About Qingcheng
Hi, I'm Qingcheng (Lance) Zhang, a math tutor with experience teaching nearly 100 students at the college level. I hold a Master of Science in Operations Research from the University of Southern California and a B.S. in Mathematics with a concentration in Data Science from UC Irvine, and I currently work as a data and operations analyst applying statistics, optimization, and quantitative modeling in a professional setting. This combination of academic depth and real-world application lets me teach math not just as a set of procedures to memorize, but as a practical toolkit — which helps students build genuine understanding and confidence rather than just getting through the next exam. I especially enjoy helping students who feel intimidated by math find their footing, and I tailor my approach to each student's learning style, pace, and goals, whether that's mastering calculus, linear algebra, statistics, or preparing for a standardized test.

Teaching method: I focus on building conceptual understanding before drilling procedure, using guided questioning so students do the reasoning themselves rather than just watching me solve problems. I connect new topics to what students already know, use visual step-by-step scaffolding for harder concepts, and spend extra time on error analysis — figuring out exactly where a student's reasoning broke down, not just marking answers wrong.
Typical lesson: Quick review of previous homework and lingering questions, introduction of the new concept anchored in a real example, guided practice together (easy to harder), independent practice while I observe, and a wrap-up recapping the key takeaway with targeted homework.
What sets me apart: I combine hands-on college-level math teaching experience with a strong applied background — an M.S. in Operations Research from USC, a B.S. in Mathematics (Data Science concentration) from UC Irvine, and current work as a data/operations analyst using optimization and statistics professionally. This lets me teach math as a practical tool, not just abstract theory, which resonates especially well with STEM and business-track students.
Who it's for: High school students working through algebra, precalculus, and calculus; college students in calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, statistics/probability, or intro optimization; and students prepping for quantitative sections of the SAT/ACT or GRE.
