About Anum
Throughout my years of studying mathematics both at secondary school and my degree, I became inspired by a range of applications it had in our lives. This curiosity led me to begin tutoring mathematics privately for GCSE and Primary level. The joy and excitement of teaching mathematics and seeing how I could help students achieve their full potential inspired me to pursue a role in teaching. Mathematics is interwoven into a variety of important disciplines. From statistics being used to construct important models in economics and interpret data in a variety of biological studies, to quantum mechanics helping decipher the elementary structures of our universe. My degree in Aerospace Engineering has equipped me with a plethora of transferable skills that will aid me in becoming a successful teacher.
I have developed analytical skills by working on projects that involve using complex software and applying the complex mathematical theory. Furthermore, I have developed skills in teamwork by collaborating on various projects at university with students and staff. I have also accumulated excellent communication skills by delivering various presentations for my dissertation to both staff and students. My degree was heavily numerated and had a variety of modules that solidified my understanding of mathematical concepts. In the modules "Mathematics and computing for Engineers" and "Vector Calculus for engineering", I learned limits, differential and integral calculus, integration, multivariable, series, vectors, matrices, and functions. Alongside this, my aerospace engineering modules gave me an opportunity to see the application of various these concepts and how they influenced our understanding and development of aircraft. This will help me not only in explaining complex mathematical topics, but also show students the breadth and scope that mathematical knowledge can have in the real world.
Becoming a self-employed maths tutor gave me the ability to interact and engage with students from a variety of different backgrounds and abilities. Different students are suited to various approaches. I developed a variety of teaching techniques such as using diagrams, and deliberate practice, involving doing a multitude of different questions on a particular topic until the student has a firm grasp over the topic. I have had the opportunity to teach mathematics George Green Children's centre where I taught children basic numeracy such as divisions and the times-tables. Furthermore, I also served as a Teaching Assistant at Nelson Primary School. This experience allowed me to understand the classroom environment and challenges teachers face in organising, managing and controlling the class. I was given the opportunity to plan lessons, teach the children, help organise lessons, and see first-hand how enjoyable and satisfying teaching can be. Having studied mathematics at university and teaching it schools has been a phenomenal experience. The ability to inspire children using mathematics and show them how their subject is used in everyday life is something I am deeply passionate about.
There is joy in enabling children to unearth their true potential, fall in love with mathematics and prepare them for the future, and I believe a career in teaching will help me do just that.

I am an Aerospace Engineering BSc Graduate with a love for tutoring and mathematics. During and prior to my time at University, I have spent time tutoring school pupils and University Freshers Mathematics, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have now completed my BSc and am looking to share my mathematical skills with young people.
In terms of my teaching methods; I take a firm and relatively structured approach to my sessions, although I strongly believe in having my lessons partially guided by my tutees, where they can share what they wish to prioritise and focus on for some of the session. (E.g., something that they are particularly struggling with.)
I strive for an open and comfortable environment for my tutees, in which they won’t feel scared to ask any questions about the work or tell me what they are struggling with. I believe this approach is so important, as clear dialogues like this make for a more productive environment and we can tackle their most urgent needs first.
Structurally, in the past, I have asked my tutees, each session, what they would need the most help in and what they would like to focus on, this is my preferred approach, as I believe the students are able to get the most out of the time we have together.
As well as this, asking what students would like to focus on and prioritise also helps me plan for the upcoming lessons ahead, as well as prioritise tasks and subject matters at the beginning of each session.
I enjoy opening up each session with a small task to get students thinking and using key skills, in order to warm them up for the upcoming activities. I want to approach each topic in accessible, bite-sized ways, using lesson plans, warm-up activities, and then leaving time in the session to practise and really understand the concepts. I like making time in the beginning and the end of each session to address any concerns tutees may have. I enjoy thinking of exciting small tasks and challenges to get students warmed up (such as 3-5 short questions/ activities to open up the task).
Overall, I want my lessons to be open and engaging, with the students being able to stop if they don’t understand to ask questions and really practise their new skills.
