About Hannah

Hi, I'm Hannah! I'm a professional British actress and voice over artist, ready to help you with your English, accent reduction and pronunciation skills. My goal is not to lose the voice that makes you who you are, but to soften any sounds that interrupt the flow of communication and help you feel confident and secure when using English in your personal and professional life.

I first started teaching English in Naples, Italy and brought my experience and knowledge back to the UK. I taught all over London for many years, visiting various offices including The Bank Of Brazil, Barclays Bank and others. I've had students from Japan, Poland, Italy, France, Latvia, Spain, India, and many more. I love getting to know people from all over the world!

As well as accent reduction and conversation classes, I'm also happy to teach English lessons that cover reading, writing and listening skills alongside helping you with any grammar problems. I've guided students through all of the Cambridge English exams - KET, PET, FCE as well as the IELTS exam.

What sets me apart? As a professional voice-over artist and trained actress, I use my voice to communicate every single day. I learned about the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) during my acting degree and have a solid understanding of the anatomy of speech.

We start with an initial free consultation. This is a great chance for us to meet and discuss your goals. I usually conduct a small test at this stage to identify any difficult sounds or areas of your English and speech for us to work on.

Once we've done this, we come up with a plan together. We work on a few sounds at a time using a variety of resources. I encourage my students to practise in-between our sessions to solidify the work we've done. It's also great if you can record yourself doing some of the exercises for homework.

Lessons are one hour and take place on Zoom. I usually recommend new students take a lesson weekly if they can. This way, you retain new information without too much of a gap between sessions. I also understand we have busy work and personal lives, so I am really flexible! I have a Zoom Scheduler which enables students to book available slots when it suits them.

My Qualifications:
- 120-hour TEFL Certificate from THE TEFL ACADEMY
- BA (Hons) in Performance from Mountview Academy of Performing Arts

Availability:
-I work Monday to Friday

Why Choose Me?
As a professional actress and voice-over artist, I bring a unique and engaging approach to language learning. I create a welcoming atmosphere where you can thrive and make significant progress. Students have commented in the past that my lessons are fun, interesting and confidence building.

Why work on your accent?
-People make both professional and personal judgments about us based on how we speak. We may not like it, but they do.
-Having a strong accent may often be perceived as having a low language level, which is frustrating for the speaker, and can lead to missed opportunities in work and everyday life.
-A strong accent, even with perfect grammar and vocabulary, can prevent understanding and make you feel less confident about communicating.
-The way we speak also affects the way we hear, leading to misunderstandings and more missed opportunities.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I'm a native English speaker, having grown up in the South West of the UK. I have a neutral British accent and was inspired to teach accent reduction after meeting many students who struggled with this aspect of English.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

A lot of people refer to RP - received pronunciation as the 'Queen's English'. This isn't really the way many people talk now, but it's a nice reference point
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I like the idiom "let's not beat around the bush" which means get to the point, tell me what you really think.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

English is the global language for pretty much every industry. Feeling confident when speaking English is so important and is often a barrier students have when I first meet them. Students describe how they find it frustrating when they can't get their point across in as eloquent a way as their native language. It's rewarding to see their confidence grow and I encourage free flowing conversations to help this.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

I think the English vowels are quite tricky! Many of them sound and feel quite similar, or not very specific for many speakers. English intonation can also take a little while to get to grips with. Some students feel like they are being over the top or exaggerating, but I encourage students to persevere, it will gradually feel more natural.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I've always loved English. I was a huge bookworm and still read most days. My biggest piece of advice I give to students is to read as much as possible, as well as to listen to podcasts on their commute, or as they go about their day. This helps them to immerse themselves in the language as much as possible.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I taught English in Italy for a year, which was an amazing learning experience! Not only did my teaching skills vastly improve, but I also got a taste of what it's like to learn the basics of a new language, and how to survive day to day in a foreign country. A humbling experience for sure!
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

As a trained actress and voice over artist, I focus on the English language every working day. My expertise is a mixture of technical knowledge, guiding students on what to do with their mouths to make each individual sound, and an informal approach, inviting students to talk freely about a wide variety of topics. This all helps them to come away from my sessions feeling more confident when communicating in English, whether at work or in social situations.
