About Kieran
I didn't want to be a math major until my second year in college, but in retrospect my academic life has always centered around this discipline. The first time I tutored math was in middle school, when my parents didn't have time to help my younger brothers with their homework. This experience led me to study more math by myself, and I started spending my weekends learning through Khan Academy. In high school, I spent one day a week tutoring students at lunch and one day a week studying SAT math with my advisor — through a "pay it forward" program. Over the summer of my senior year I split my time between working on mathematical olympiad problems with friends and tutoring at the Mathnasium. After my first year in college, I joined a tutoring program for students taking first year courses and privately tutored a high school junior in calculus and statistics. Looking back on my experiences — both in terms of what I've done and what's felt most important to me — my decision to major in mathematics was inevitable. Now, while I'm taking a gap year in preparation for graduate school, I want to go back to my roots in tutoring.

I have tutored students in STEM subjects for over six years (through high school and college programs). I understand what it feels like to struggle with math, and I know what strategies work to actually build mathematical knowledge. I practice a problem-based approach where I help students work through real problems. This involves teaching new concepts, giving advice when students struggle, and (most importantly) stepping back when students take initiative.
I have experience teaching at all levels of math, from arithmetic to algebra to trigonometry to precalculus to calculus to differential equations and beyond. I am happy to tutor any subject matter at flexible rates, all I ask is that students apply themselves and be willing to learn!
