About Gerard

My name is Gerard Ryan. I am TEFL certified and I have 3+ years of experience teaching English as a foreign language in China and Vietnam. I have a master's in business management and 6+ years in sales. Looking to take your career to the next level? I can help with any level of English. What makes me unique in my offering is that I can help with business English and sales. For example, a previous client of mine was a Spanish entrepreneur living in Ireland. She was a graphic designer and had trouble closing deals. Often, her clients didn't communicate what they wanted clearly, or what they wanted might not have been advisable graphically. Bottom line was that she was losing money. After a quick consultation with me, we figured that she needed to improve her grammar, but from the perspective of an entrepreneur, she needed to learn how to qualify prospects by asking correct questions. She needed to learn how to do a needs analysis so she could reduce misunderstanding. She needed to learn how to overcome objections. And most importantly, she needed to close the deal and move on to her next project. Instead, she often felt taken advantage of because she didn't know how to get commitment on a specific course of action, because she never asked the correct questions to begin with, and she didn't know how to assert herself when the client would change aspects of what they wanted. Your ordinary English teacher cannot offer you these skills because they are not equipped to. Ask yourself, why should you learn abstract vocabulary and grammar without a clear focus on what you need to succeed? Why not instead message me, let me tailor a curriculum to suit your needs, and then you can learn the grammar and vocabulary through a context that will help you succeed in life.

Lessons can be 50 minutes or 60 minutes. Target vocab and grammar will be planned well in advance. The specific vocab and grammar points can be tailored to meet individual student needs. In group settings, I have premade curricula ready for each level. I am happy to work off other syllabuses if the student wishes and makes it clear from the beginning. Introduction of vocabulary: (15 minutes) -miming/ drawing to test the student's current knowledge. -Choral repetitions -Game - student takes turns miming or drawing the target vocab, and other students guess for points. Introduction of Grammar: (20 minutes) - Read sentences with the target vocab while seamlessly incorporating the target grammar -Ask students to signal when they hear the target vocab. -Show students the sentences written out. Take turns reading. -Show students 2-3 incorrect sentences for every 1 correct sentence. Break into pairs to have students attempt to pick the correct sentence. -Corrections are made. Younger students will be given more reinforcing questions, e.g., Do we say 'I are running or I am running?' etc...Teens and adults will have the sentences segmented into different elements. For example, the formula for the present continuous = Subject + verb(ing) + Object. Over time, using the formula approach to teaching grammar allows students to become self-sufficient learners. For example, they will know if they need to express an action that has started but hasn't finished, they know they just need to add -ing to the regular verb. Hence, they can change every element of a sentence and still be accurate without actually being shown the sentence they produce. Consolidation: (15 minutes) This is an opportunity for students to create new sentences using the formula outlined previously. After the first round, the formula can be taken away from view to test the students. This game can be played individually or in pairs. It can be made less difficult for less experienced learners by offering sentence chunks in a random order. For example |walking| |She| | is|. Younger students respond well to points and competition. Older students respond better to countdown timers. Whoever has the most correct sentences in 5 minutes wins, for example. Wrap up: For the 50-minute class, the session ends with a quick game and a recap of the lesson. For the 60-minute class, an extra game or two will be played. Every student has their own strengths and weaknesses. The extra 10 minutes allows for a tailor-made solution to the students' weak points. I know hundreds of games and activities to address these points. These extra minutes ensure no one is left behind. For stronger students, I delegate leadership roles to them in group play so they remain engaged and motivated to learn. Overall, in my experience, I've learned that the most efficient route to success is to make the experience enjoyable for the learner. Often, learners feel demotivated to learn English if they feel they're not making the correct progress, it's boring, and not challenging enough. I aim to address this by understanding the needs of the student and working with them to pave out for success in the future. Please feel free to message me, and we can start helping you achieve your goals. Thank you for reading.
