About Matthew

I am a CELTA and DELTA qualified teacher with a degree in Linguistics from the University of Sheffield. I have been a teacher for 10 years and I have taught all over the world (Mexico, Thailand, Malawi). Most recently I have been working in universities in my hometown of Liverpool. I have taught online previously, so I am more than comfortable using different digital platforms. In my teaching career I have taught Business English in companies, if you want to improve communication with international clients in your current job, or improve you chance of finding another job. I have also taught exam preparation courses for FCE/CAE/CPE if you are looking at gaining a recognised English qualification. Or, if you are just looking for a professional language teacher to help you to improve your English for your own hobby or fun, I have helped students of all ages achieve their different goals, but most of my experience is with young adults and university age students.

About the lesson

My lessons are the same quality as you would receive in a university or highly rated language school English course. We will start by identifying your level and your particular course goals. From there I will structure a course and syllabus that is designed to achieve these goals. This might involve using some materials from language coursebooks, or if you have specific goals, we will use real life materials that I will adapt for your needs.

For academic English, I will teach you based on your specific goals connected with your field of study. Outside of class, you will read articles that I provide that are connected with your subject or listen and watch videos of talks and lectures. I will give you comprehension questions to think about while you read or listen, and then we will discuss them together in a seminar style online with comments on your language, pronunciation and academic style. We will also focus on writing different types of academic essays, reports and proposals.

If you are preparing for IELTS or other Cambridge Exams, we will do general language improvement as well as more exam-focused practice with specific feedback and advice about how to achieve the score you need.

If you are focussed on improving English for your job, then we can take some of your real life situations, documents or projects and work on these directly. Doing roleplays, presentations, practice meetings...whatever your need is.

Generally, I like to work on projects. To take something that you need to do or a hobby of yours, and look at how to achieve this goal in English. I will provide materials, support, and clear feedback about how to improve your language or performance of the task in English.

Block book lessons for discounts and flexible times. Blocks of 5 valid for 5 weeks. Blocks of 10 valid for 10 weeks. You can cancel classes up to 3 hours in advance. You must aim to rebook within the next 48 hours, if possible. Breaks and holidays can be arranged in advance with notice.
