About Brielle
I am a Biology tutor with 7 years of experience and a PhD in Ecology. I have taught over 240 students across all levels from GCSE through to graduate level. My research background in ecology gives my teaching of ecosystem biology a genuinely specialist depth, while my broad biological training means I am equally effective teaching the cellular, molecular, and physiological content at other levels. I use my research experience to contextualise textbook Biology within the broader scientific enterprise, helping students understand how biological knowledge is generated and tested rather than only what the current knowledge is. My Biology teaching uses a systems biology approach, treating organisms and ecosystems as integrated systems rather than collections of independent parts, because this perspective reflects how Biology actually works and produces the integrative understanding that the most demanding examination questions specifically test. I develop students' ability to use biological vocabulary precisely and consistently rather than approximately, because examination mark schemes at A-Level and above award marks for specific technical terms and penalise vague or incorrect usage, even when the underlying understanding is sound. Ecology teaching in my lessons is built around the theme of energy flow and nutrient cycling as the unifying principles that connect all ecological relationships, because students who understand that ecosystems are ultimately about energy transfer can make sense of predator-prey dynamics, population changes, and human environmental impacts as connected consequences of the same underlying principles. I use dissection images and virtual lab platforms for students who have not encountered practical Biology directly, developing the visual and interpretive skills that are examined in practical components of A-Level Biology. Animal behaviour is taught as an integrated topic connecting genetics, evolution, ecology, and physiology rather than as a standalone topic, because it is one of the richest points of connection across biological disciplines. My teaching goal is a student who reads a biological text they have never encountered before and immediately begins asking productive questions about mechanism, evidence, and implication.
