About Maura
I am a teacher with a B.Ed Hons degree who specialised in Music but also has English as a second subject and have taught across all key stages from Primary through to KS 5 in Secondary. My work has included the overseeing and preparation of Trinity College Communications Skills and Drama examinations, TOEFL, IELTS and ABRSM examinations. I also have experience in teaching GCSE Spanish and have taught History to Year 7 and Year 8 students. I have been a Head of Department for Music, a Director of Performing and Expressive Arts, a Head of Year and a Senior Teacher with responsibility for Pastoral Care, Student Council, PSME, ECA, Events and Whole School initiatives in international schools. Through Performance Management I have been involved in teacher training and I have also mentored colleagues who have been in Head of Department roles or are aspiring to be in such roles. In my roles as a Head of Department and Faculty I have overseen and prepared SOWs from Primary through to Secondary schools and have actively led initiatives and INSETs for the development of Literacy across all key stages. I have experience as a Librarian using my English teaching experience to promote reading and further Literacy skills, organized Book Week, prepared materials and led research skills, organised weekly reading activities, encouraged the use of the Library as a Learning Centre to help promote all subjects in both fiction and non-fiction, the use of technology given my background as a multi disciplinary teacher. As a Music specialist I have directed choirs, orchestra and ensembles, directed productions, assemblies and events both within schools and the local community. Mine is a unique and diverse background but one which I feel can offer specialist knowledge, up to date methodologies in line with the 21st society we live in and encourage, promote and guide every individual student to achieve the very best he/she can be.

My teaching methods are to be very aware of the individual needs of my students. I like an holistic approach to the students I teach as it is very important to me that good listening and communication takes place, this is key. I like to start my lessons with a sense of calmness, asking the students how they are, a gentle review of the previous lesson, focusing on any areas they feel they did not fully understand and incorporating this as a part of the lesson I am giving so that the next stage of the topic I am teaching them has a successful outcome. I will also explain what the learning objectives of each lesson are to be so that they have a sense of connection with how the lessons are planned and what steps we need to take to ensure they have a successful outcome. If possible I would send an outline of the lesson in advance to the students so that they know what to expect, be able to prepare any questions they have about the lesson. The lessons I teach need to be able to give strategies to the students about such things as what the text is about, the vocabulary, how to approach vocabulary they do not understand, what the words in the question mean, how to tackle the different types of questions and how to deal with extended written answers. At the plenary point I would like feedback from the students about what they feel they have learnt, checking if they understand the homework tasks set that may be required. Once the lesson has finished I would like them to feel welcome to contact me about any areas they have problems with and that they have immediate and positive feedback about the homework tasks set with advice about how to improve the areas they found difficult or didn't understand.
