Physics has a reputation as being one of the harder subjects and rightfully so according to many students, but why is this the case? Number one is the sheer amount of material that is required on the syllabus. The exam may have a bit of wiggle room in terms of avoiding the difficult questions, but if a student wants to do well, they really have to understand a lot of chapters more thoroughly than other subjects might require. Physics requires its students to learn a list of mandatory experiments, understand the thinking behind relatively complex maths, navigate complex concepts and most importantly link science to real life. Physics exams often use the real world and real objects in space to base their questions around which demands more complex thinking from the student. Knowing the material isn’t enough for any student, they also have to understand how the questions are asked and how their knowledge is tested. This is what makes it so difficult compared to other questions, a lot of subjects will grade you well for pure memorization but physics as described can be quite different, however, it still requires that same level of memorization. It is still a science after all!
A physics tutor is essential for excelling in physics for the majority of students. Usually, a physics teacher is strapped for time, they have many students and classes with many subjects to cover for two years. Every student has their preferences when it comes to what questions they’re gonna do in the exam but a teacher can’t cater for everyone's individual preferences. A student may be forced to work on topics they really can’t wrap their heads around or maybe they’re ahead of the curve and want to work on a different chapter. A tutor will be able to do a lot for these students. They can work on whatever the student wishes to focus on. It might be so that they can work on other chapters, or maybe just revise on difficult already cover chapters or maybe they need help for an upcoming test. This is potentially their strongest benefit but they also have many more.
A tutor, regardless of subject, does a lot for their student. They provide a far more comfortable environment that allows students to be curious, to ask questions, to talk about potential difficulties they have. In a school environment, it can be difficult to do all these things, especially if the student is shy or there simply isn’t a lot of time. Tutors have a unique relationship with students, there is nothing forcing them to teach them a certain way, and they have a lot more choice in what they do with their time, and they are seen as much more of an equal than a teacher. A tutor also helps in building a routine, a work ethic and a sense of responsibility. Tutors don’t discipline when homework isn’t completed, instead, it is the student who punishes themself when they don’t do the work, it wastes valuable tutoring time which in turn is a waste of money. Students feel a lot more responsibility to complete work when money is on the line and they have a more personal friendly relationship with the tutor.
