FAQ's

🗣️ What is the spelling rule for г, к, х, ж, ш, ч, щ in Russian?

This rule governs what vowels can follow seven specific consonants in Russian, and it never changes.

The rule is straightforward:

  • The seven letters: The letters г, к, х (velars) and ж, ш, ч, щ (sibilants) all obey the same constraint.
  • Forbidden vowels: After these letters, you never write ы, ю, or я.
  • Correct replacements: The soft-vowel alternatives и, у, and а step in automatically.
  • Practical example: After к, the adjective ending becomes -ий, not -ый, as in русский.

A private tutor can walk you through these spelling patterns step by step and correct mistakes in real time.

💰 What is the cost of Russian lessons in Galway?

The average cost of Russian lessons in Galway is around €10/h.

Several factors influence the price:

  • Your skill level and learning goals
  • The tutor's experience and qualifications
  • The number of hours booked per week
  • Where the sessions take place

Most teachers offer a free trial lesson so you can test their approach before committing.

💬 What steps should I follow to learn Russian effectively?

With the right approach, Russian is far more accessible than most people expect.

Here is a practical roadmap for beginners:

  • Master the Cyrillic alphabet: Once you recognise the 33 characters, you can already sound out signs, menus, and simple texts.
  • Focus on pronunciation early: Russian vowels shift depending on stress, and consonants can be hard or soft — a tutor's ear catches errors you might miss.
  • Learn high-frequency vocabulary: Prioritise the most-used words first; even a small set gives you real conversational power.
  • Understand the case system: A tutor can introduce cases in context so they feel natural rather than overwhelming.

A private tutor tailors each session to your pace and corrects mistakes before they become habits.

Interesting facts about Russian

The Russian language belongs to the family of East Slavic languages. The most used East Slavic languages today are Belarusian, Russian and Ukrainian. The East Slavic languages are descended from the Rus language which was used in medieval Kievan Rus from the 9th to the 13 centuries.

Russian is the most widely spoken East Slavic language, with over 258 million speakers of it worldwide. It is one of the two official languages spoken on the international space station.

Russian uses the Cyrillic script for its writing as well as other languages, some examples being: Turkish and Mongolian. The Early Cyrillic alphabet was developed during the 9th century AD in the First Bulgarian Empire and the new script was the base for many languages in Orthodox eastern Europe at the time.

Russian as we know it, arose at the start of the 18th century when Peter the Great started carrying out modernising reforms. The first grammar book to standardise Russian came out in 1755.

Russian culture and community in Galway

There are quite a few Russian speakers in Ireland, with estimates at about 80,000 speakers. In Galway there is an educational centre that has been around since 2008 and their goal is to preserve Russian heritage and culture of those who have moved here to Ireland. It provides an opportunity for Russian's and Russian speaking immigrants to come together and be able to speak their native language and relate to people with a similar culture.

Today, the centre focuses on teaching children each year about the Russian language, something that can be neglected if the children are born here in Ireland. The school also provides Russian lessons for anyone else that is interested in learning!

There are often events taking place there such as art classes, theatre performances and various hobby clubs so it’s a great place for young children of all backgrounds to come together and have a fun time as well as a place of learning for those who are interested.

The school accepts children from 2 to 18 for their language courses. There are also separate lessons for any adults who wish to study Russian.
