In Russian, the 7-letter rule is a spelling principle every beginner needs to memorise early on.

Here is how it works:

• The seven letters: The letters г, к, х (velars) and ж, ш, ч, щ (sibilants) all obey the same constraint.
• Forbidden vowels: The vowels ы, ю, and я cannot appear directly after any of these seven consonants.
• Correct replacements: Use и instead of ы, у instead of ю, and а instead of я.
• Practical example: You write ножи (knives), not ножы, since ж belongs to this group.

A private tutor can walk you through these spelling patterns step by step and correct mistakes in real time.

A private Russian lesson in Waterford costs approximately €18/h.

The cost depends on:

Learning Russian gets much easier when you break it into manageable stages.

Follow these key steps to build a strong foundation:

• Master the Cyrillic alphabet: Once you recognise the 33 characters, you can already sound out signs, menus, and simple texts.
• Focus on pronunciation early: Practise the distinction between hard and soft consonants from day one. This shapes your accent and listening ability.
• Learn high-frequency vocabulary: Around 500 common words cover roughly 80% of everyday conversation.
• Understand the case system: Cases are the backbone of Russian grammar — learn them gradually, starting with the two most common.

A private tutor tailors each session to your pace and corrects mistakes before they become habits.
