FAQ's

🗣️ What does the 7-letter spelling rule mean in Russian?

In Russian, the 7-letter rule is a spelling principle every beginner needs to memorise early on.

Here is how it works:

  • The seven letters: These seven consonants — г, к, х, ж, ш, ч, щ — follow a strict pattern.
  • Forbidden vowels: You must avoid placing ы, ю, or я after г, к, х, ж, ш, ч, or щ.
  • Correct replacements: Use и instead of ы, у instead of ю, and а instead of я.
  • Practical example: You write ножи (knives), not ножы, since ж belongs to this group.

Practising with a qualified teacher helps you internalise this rule so it becomes second nature.

💰 What do Russian lessons cost in Dublin?

The hourly rate for Russian tuition in Dublin averages €21/h.

The cost depends on:

  • The level of study (complete beginner, conversational, exam prep)
  • The instructor's credentials and track record
  • The duration and frequency of lessons
  • The teaching mode (in-person or video call)

Comparing several profiles helps you find the best value for your budget.

💬 What is the best way to start learning Russian?

Learning Russian gets much easier when you break it into manageable stages.

Follow these key steps to build a strong foundation:

  • Master the Cyrillic alphabet: Start here because reading and writing unlock every other skill. Most learners memorise it in under a week.
  • Focus on pronunciation early: Stress patterns change how vowels sound, so training your ear early prevents habits that are hard to undo later.
  • Learn high-frequency vocabulary: Around 500 common words cover roughly 80% of everyday conversation.
  • Understand the case system: Cases are the backbone of Russian grammar — learn them gradually, starting with the two most common.

Working one-on-one with an experienced teacher accelerates your progress and keeps you motivated.

Why Learning Russian is a good idea

Many people speak Russian as their native language, with there being so many speakers of the language, having knowledge of it can come in use for job opportunities (not necessarily in Russia) and if you one day decide to travel to Russian for a holiday or to live there, knowing the language will make the process much smoother for you and less stressful.

Knowing another language, alongside your native one helps make you much more employable even if you don’t live in the country where that language is spoken. Many companies have international customers and often need employees to be able to service those customers in varying roles.

Knowing another language also shows that you are capable of learning new things and that you have an interest in the outside world, all good traits to be associated with.

Learning another language may lead you to making new friends, either Russians or others who are passionate in speaking the language and learning about Russian culture, seeing places you never thought you would visit.

Is Russian difficult to learn?

Some people can be put off from learning a new language or Russian in this case, because they may believe that it is very difficult to learn.

For Russian it is necessary to learn the alphabet as it is derived from Cyrillic script which is very different from the Roman alphabet that languages such as English, French and German use. Some new learners can be put off by this but despite how different the Russian alphabet looks, it actually takes a very short time to learn with only 33 letters and often only takes two days to learn!

A difficulty that some new learners may face when learning Russian is proper pronunciation of words. Russian is infamous for having complicated words and rules for pronunciation but this is often the way when learning foreign languages. A good way to vastly improve your pronunciation is by imitation. Hearing others speak and developing an ear for what sounds like what, something that our tutors will be able to help with a lot.

Learning anything new isn’t easy but with the right attitude and work anyone can start learning Russian and being able to speak and understand it.
