About Erin
First and foremost, I am a Mathematics major. This subject is something that I love learning about independently as well as taking courses. I have been tutoring at a local community college and taking my required classes. My "end goal" is to become a Mathematics Professor at the same college where my grandfather taught Math. I love working with students in general, but seeing them understand concepts that previously baffled them is the most wonderful thing to see and to be a part of. I would very much like to continue to help anyone learn and understand this subject.

My approach depends on the situation. I work with students in class, one-on-one, and online. In general, I like to know how the student has progressed with the subject and how they view their progress. That helps me determine how much time and resources will be necessary and how to structure lessons for the student(s). I prefer to tutor Intermediate Algebra, and occasionally PreCalculus and Calculus.
My sessions typically include a short opening activity/discussion to gauge where the student is at with the course. I typically work with a lot of neurodivergent students, students with physical and/or mental disorders, and/or who are coming from a bad home or a bad day. I follow that up with several activities based on engaging the student while covering mathematical concepts in tandem. Everything is centered around keeping it fun and interesting, while still getting the idea across and hoping for those AH-HA moments. When nearing the end of my session, I will finish with some predetermined closing activity. The closer could be a call to action, listing off things they think they're struggling with/doing better on/doing well, etc.
My drop-in hours are much more casual. The students bring whatever they're struggling with, and we will cover the concepts that haven't clicked yet.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my understanding and empathy with my students. I understand what it's like to fail, have test anxiety, and struggle with the material. That's where structure and having a specific approach to learning has gotten me to where I am.
