I approach every topic optimistically. I use what the student already knows to boost their confidence, before introducing the harder topic, showing them examples and making sure they can complete tasks independently, so that the skills remain with them. I occasionally use rhymes to help students remember formulae, as it sticks with them, even if they are in a stressful exam.
