About Charlie

I recently graduated from LSE with a First Class degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and this autumn I'm starting an MPhil in Economics at the University of Oxford. Academically I've always had a particular strength in maths and quantitative subjects, with an A* at A-level and a very high First in university-level quantitative methods, and I genuinely enjoy the subject, an enthusiasm I hope to share with students.

Before university I spent a gap year working as a classroom assistant in a UK prep school and an Australian secondary school, working alongside teachers with students from primary age through to sixth form. That experience taught me how differently people learn and how much confidence shapes results, especially in a subject like maths where a student who believes they "can't do it" often just hasn't had things explained the right way to suit their learning style.

I'm patient, reliable and easy to get on with, and I take the responsibility of tutoring seriously. I always turn up prepared, communicate clearly with students and parents, and genuinely care whether a student improves. My aim is always for a student to leave a lesson understanding something they didn't before, and feeling more capable than when they started.

I'm a recent LSE graduate (First Class, Philosophy, Politics and Economics) heading to Oxford this autumn for an MPhil in Economics. I hold an A* in A-level Maths and achieved a very high First in university-level quantitative methods, so I'm comfortable across the full range from GCSE foundations up to degree-level material. I also spent a gap year working as a classroom assistant in a UK prep school (ages 7–13) and an Australian secondary school (ages 12–18), so I've worked with students across a wide range of ages and abilities in a school setting.

My method is straightforward. I start by finding out exactly where a student is struggling, then work through the underlying concept until it's clear, and lock it in with worked examples and past-paper practice under exam conditions. Every lesson is tailored to the individual: exam students get targeted technique and timing work; students building foundations get a patient, step-by-step pace. I set focused practice between lessons and track progress so we always know what to prioritise next.

I teach students at GCSE and A-level, as well as undergraduates needing support with quantitative methods and statistics, and I help students preparing for maths-heavy admissions and aptitude tests. Whether the goal is a top grade, rebuilding confidence after a rocky patch, or stretching an already-strong student further, I adapt to it.

Lessons are typically one hour, with longer sessions available for intensive exam preparation and shorter ones for younger students. Having worked with school-age students day-to-day, I adapt my manner to the age and confidence of whoever I'm teaching.

I'm based in London over the summer and moving to Oxford in late September for postgraduate study; from the autumn I continue to tutor online with more limited availability.
