About Emila

I'm Emila, I'm here to help you with your KS3, KS4, and A-level Mathematics journey! I can cover content from all known exam boards such as AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, and WJEC.

Here's a little bit about my personal academic background:

I'm Emila, a University College London (UCL) graduate with a First Class Integrated Master’s degree in Chemistry. My academic journey included advanced research at the Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron facility, where I investigated materials for device applications using high-energy X-rays. For the distinction of my dissertation, I was awarded the UCL Nyholm Prize by the Department of Chemistry, and my overall performance placed me on the UCL Dean’s List, an honour given to the top 5% of students in the Maths & Physical Sciences Faculty.

Here's a little bit of insight into my teaching style:

I’m passionate about science education and have experience tutoring GCSE and A-level Mathematics. My goal is to help students aged 11 to 20 build strong, lasting confidence in Mathematics. My teaching style focuses on clarity, curiosity, and helping students make logical connections across topics so they can approach Mathematics with confidence and genuine interest.

Regardless of exam board at GCSE level there will be some variation of non-calculator assessment and calculator papers. Whereas in A-level regardless of exam board there will be some partition of pure mathematics, statistics, and mechanics. I believe studying the assessment type can be half of the battle, my lessons are always very assessment question heavy always linking our learning back to the exam format.

Predictability in the GCSE and A-level courses:

There are topics such as "recurring decimals to fractions" which can often trip up students but consistently turn up on the exam papers, likewise with "completing the square" and other regularly appearing questions. These are eventualities we can prepare for and build a matched expectation of what you should appear in your summer exams.

Whether you are looking to go from a grade 3 - 5 or a grade 7 - 9, the process is the same. Familiarising ourselves with the overall course content, understanding the layout of our assessment, and putting in the repetitions to perfect our exam technique.

GCSE Mathematics lessons:
Typically 1 hour lessons split in 3 sections of 20 minutes:

The first third will be spent on highlighting the topic being covered, briefly displaying what it is, how we can be assessed on it, and how it relates to other topics.

The second third will be spent on working through some joint examples together with scaling difficulty, beginning with straight forward non-applied examples progressing to scenario applied examples.

The final third will be spent working on some independently completed examples which we will go through upon completion, marking them in an exam style to display at which stages points will be picked up.

This format will be used in the same fashion for A-level content however due to the jump in course content difficulty more time per topic is advised.

All of my students will learn to understand that especially in subjects like Mathematics making mistakes is an essential part of the learning process and without it little understanding and therefore progress can be made.
