About Spencer
I accidently fell into a tutoring position for a family friend a few years ago and instantly took to it. The children taught ended up excelling in their year 6 SATS maths papers and were able to apply the techniques I taught them when answering tricky questions. Since then I have continued tutoring in my free time as I find it a huge source of enjoyment as I always have a good rapport with the kids and parents/guardians.
I graduated from Oxford University in 2021 with a master's degree in economics. The course was incredibly mathematical and prior to starting the degree I attended a summer school crash course in advanced mathematics to equip me with the strong mathematical foundations I needed. The mathematics I am now familiar with, thanks to this degree, mean that teaching primary and secondary school maths is a welcome break to what I am accustomed to now!

Teaching can take two approaches:
1) Exam focus - if you have upcoming SATS or other exams, I can tailor the sessions so that we can run through past papers after past papers. We will stop to understand the logic behind questions presented and then tweak the questions (make them harder) to ensure that any variations of these questions that may come up in your real exam are covered. We will also focus on exam time management and approach.
2) Theory focus - for those pupils who want to organically develop their understanding of mathematics without a particular end-point assessment in mind (like an exam). This approach will move from topic to topic, understanding the "why" behind results and theorems. This will leave you a more well-rounded mathematician with a strong foundation of transferable skills to future academic endeavours.
Lessons are a minimum of one hour long and start from £30 per hour per child.
Additionally, you can choose to include personalised lesson recap flash cards to aid revision.
Can teach any age from primary school to year 9 and GCSE. However, GCSE is available for a slight premium which can be negotiated (time expense will usually be greater on both parts, both in preparation and teaching, for GCSE and closeness to the exam dates would have to be factored in).
