About Filippo

I help you turn a complex problem into a clear, rigorous and verifiable solution. Whether it's an exercise, an exam, a project or a technical document, I work with a precise method: define the problem correctly, keep the steps clean, run consistency checks and explain clearly — so that you genuinely become independent. The goal isn't reaching "the right answer", but building a way of reasoning that's useful today and still worth something tomorrow.

Over 12 years I've worked with more than 3,000 students in mathematics and physics, at every level: from high school to university.

Superprof lists 209,151 teachers in Italy. I'm in the country's top 10 overall, and have been consistently in the top 5 since 2020 in both physics (over 21,000 teachers) and mathematics (over 41,000). I teach in English and regularly work with students enrolled in English-taught degree programmes, in Italy and abroad.

★ Teaching
I taught Mathematics and Physics at Liceo Scientifico "Galileo Galilei" in Catania (an Italian science-track secondary school) and, as a university tutor, I was awarded more than 15 tutoring contracts totalling 360 hours — with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (Linear Algebra, Geometry), Building Engineering and Architecture (General Physics) and Chemical Sciences (Physics I and II, and laboratory courses).
I also teach in adult education. That means I've worked with students of every age and every starting point, and I take nothing for granted.

★ Research
I'm a theoretical physicist with an interdisciplinary background across physics, mathematics, quantitative modelling, data science and network econometrics. I'm currently a researcher in Mathematics and Data Analytics for Finance at the University of Verona.

Before that: a postgraduate Master's in Quantum Science and Technology at the University of Catania, working on open-system simulations with IBM Quantum; a Master's in Data Management and Curation at S.I.S.S.A. in Trieste; and a research grant at C.N.R.-I.M.M. in Catania.

MSc in Physics (110/110, theoretical track — the highest grade in the Italian system), with a thesis on non-Hermitian PT-symmetric crystals, and a 12-month placement at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg on general relativity, gauge/gravity duality and particle physics.
BSc in Physics, with a thesis on topological phases of matter.

★ Why I'm telling you this
Not because any of it is needed for a routine exercise. But because when an exam is genuinely hard — an advanced course, a lecturer with very idiosyncratic exam papers, a problem that looks like nothing in the textbook — the difference is made by someone who knows that subject from the inside.

★ I don't have a single method, and I say so openly
How I work is something I decide once I understand who I'm working with. Someone rebuilding from scratch and someone going from a 24 to a 30 need two different things, and treating them the same way is one of the reasons so much tutoring doesn't work. If you already have the basics, we start straight from past exam papers. We work on real problems — the ones from your course — and theory comes in small doses: when it's needed, exactly where it's needed. It's the fastest route to being ready for a sitting. If you're starting further back, the first goal isn't mastery, it's orientation. I'm not interested in making you an expert on the first two chapters: you'd end up flawless on the first twenty pages and lost on everything else, which is precisely how people arrive at an exam unprepared. I'd rather start with a view from above of the whole syllabus. At first it's necessarily rough, and that's fine — it's there to show you where things are, which ones connect and where it's all heading, so you're not moving in the dark. Then we come down and walk the ground piece by piece: each new topic finds its place in a picture you already hold, instead of joining a list. That rough overview is the starting point, not the destination. By the end you could draw the map yourself: you know the syllabus in detail and, above all, you know how to find your way alone. That's where I want to get you — and with anyone who stays consistent, we get there. Then, either way, we converge on the same thing: progressively harder problems, until you tackle them on your own and I only step in where needed.

★ Theory, as deep as you need
We raise the technical level as far as you want. If the goal is an oral exam, we go into full proofs: the hypotheses of each theorem, why each one is needed, what happens if it fails, counterexamples, edge cases. In an oral it isn't enough to solve the problem — you have to hold up under questioning, and that's exactly where the questions come from. The same applies to theory-heavy exams, to anyone aiming at a top mark, and to anyone writing a thesis: there's no ceiling on how deep we can go. We decide together how far to push, based on what you'll be asked.

★ How a lesson works
Lessons are online, with an interactive whiteboard and professional software for simulation and for checking results. At the end of each lesson you receive a PDF with everything we produced together: boards, worked problems, steps. Plus selected material for the topics we're covering. It all stays in your personal area, and it stays yours. Explanations run on concrete examples and practical analogies: if a formula means nothing to you, the problem is almost always that nobody has shown you where it comes from. I also teach in English, with students on English-taught degree programmes.

★ What I cover
Preparation for university exams and school assessments - Filling gaps and catching up, including from previous years - Extension work for anyone aiming at a top mark - Entrance test preparation - Worked solutions to problems, with detailed notes - Writing and reviewing coursework (dissertations, reports, presentations, slides) in LaTeX or professional software

★ On artificial intelligence It's convenient for revising a definition or having a standard concept re-explained, but it can't give you what I offer: someone who knows your exam and your lecturer, who sees where you get stuck while you're working, and who stands behind every step you take into that exam.

★ How we start The first contact is an introductory phone call: we look at your exam together, the time you have and where you're starting from, and I tell you honestly whether I can be useful to you and how best to proceed.
