About John

I am a British-qualified Mathematics teacher with QTS, a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics and a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Manchester. I have over 15 years of teaching experience in the UK and internationally, including ten years at The British School Rio de Janeiro, where I spent eight years as Head of Mathematics.

I am also an IB Diploma Mathematics Examiner, giving me detailed insight into assessment standards, examination technique and the common errors that can prevent students from achieving the marks they are capable of.

I specialise in IB Mathematics Analysis & Approaches (AA HL and AA SL) and Applications & Interpretation (AI HL and AI SL), with particular expertise in examination preparation and the IB Mathematics Internal Assessment (IA). I also teach Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics, GCSE Mathematics and SAT Math.

My approach is highly personalised. I use carefully chosen questions and targeted questioning to identify exactly where a student’s understanding is secure and where gaps or misconceptions remain. I explain mathematical ideas in different ways, adjusting the level of challenge and pace to suit each individual student.

My aim is not simply to help students memorise methods, but to develop genuine mathematical understanding, strong exam technique and the confidence to solve unfamiliar problems independently.

I am based in Rio de Janeiro and offer one-to-one tuition both locally and online to students anywhere in the world.

About the lesson

My lessons are highly focused on solving carefully selected mathematics questions, as I believe students develop the strongest understanding by actively applying ideas rather than simply listening to explanations.

I use targeted questioning throughout each lesson to understand exactly how a student is thinking, identify misconceptions and determine when they are ready to move on. Every lesson is adapted in real time: if a student is comfortable with the material, I increase the level of challenge; if I identify a gap in understanding, I slow down, explore the underlying concept and explain it in a different way before returning to the problem.

A typical lesson begins by identifying the student’s priorities and the areas requiring the most attention. We then work through progressively challenging questions, discussing not only how to solve them, but why the methods work, how different topics connect and how to approach similar questions efficiently in an examination.

I use a range of resources, including Desmos, diagrams and visual representations, whenever they help make an idea clearer. With over 15 years of teaching experience, I have developed multiple ways of explaining most mathematical concepts and can adapt my approach to the individual student.

My aim is for students to leave each lesson with greater understanding, stronger problem-solving skills and more confidence in their ability to tackle mathematics independently.
