About Melanie
Hello, My name is Melanie. I have been an educator for 12 years, but have been assisting students in various subjects over 20 years. I am certified in math. My passion is that all students will learn to appreciate math, and understand that we use math every day. From cooking our breakfast, to driving/riding to work, to playing video games or sports. I like to build confidence in the students I work with. I also like to make sure the student feels like they have a voice in their learning journey, as they are ones going to school and taking the test. It takes everyone (guardian, student, and teacher/tutor) to make learning a success.

I believe that Math is used in everyday life. My approach with tutoring is to find out what interests my student and use that as the main focus to drive the lesson. If you like money then let's add, multiply, or find the equation to make or lose money. If you like sports, we can use that to drive the lesson. My students should feel more confident and knowledgeable after a lesson with me. The initial meeting, I like to know how a student feels about math, their strengths, and their weaknesses. I then build lessons tailored for them. Depending on their grade, we do a few minutes of drills (adding, laws of exponents, etc) to ensure we know the function. Then we discuss the lesson, then we do practice, where I watch the student solve problems. Before every session ended I check to see how a student feels about the lesson, and depending on preference assign a practice problem or two.
