The heart is a strong, muscular organ about the size of your fist, located slightly to the left of the center of your chest. It has four chambers — the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle — which work together to pump blood throughout the body. The right side receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and sends it to the lungs, while the left side receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and sends it to the rest of the body. Valves between the chambers act like one-way doors, ensuring blood flows in the right direction. The walls of the heart are made of special muscle called cardiac muscle, which works nonstop to keep you alive
