About Derek

I hold a PhD in Chemistry and have over a decade of teaching experience at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels. My teaching includes more than 50 credit hours of chemistry courses at Honolulu Community College, Windward Community College, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, as well as AP Chemistry at the high school level. I have worked with students across a wide range of ages and skill levels, helping them achieve mastery in science and math while building confidence and study skills. My professional background ensures that students receive instruction from someone who understands the subject deeply, knows how to communicate it effectively, and is committed to their academic success.

About the lesson

My Approach as a Tutor:
I make complex science and math concepts clear, relatable, and manageable. My focus is on understanding why a concept works, not just memorizing steps, so students develop comprehension that lasts. I use real-world examples, guided problem-solving, and visual aids to connect abstract ideas to practical applications.

Typical Lesson Plan:
Each session begins with a quick check-in to see what the student is working on and where they feel stuck. We review key concepts, then work through example problems together; starting with guided instruction and moving toward independent practice. I adjust pacing and difficulty to match the student’s needs, always leaving time for questions and recap so they end the session with clarity and confidence.

What Sets Me Apart:
I can adapt lessons to fit different learning styles and levels, from middle school through college. My deep subject knowledge allows me to explain concepts in multiple ways until the “light bulb” turns on.

Who My Lessons Are For:
Chemistry: Middle school through college-level chemistry (including AP Chemistry)
Science: Any science subject through high school (biology, physics, earth science)
Math: Up to pre-calculus (including algebra, geometry, trigonometry)
