About Maria
Having a love for music from a very young age, I had no idea where it would take me. Studying music at a university level at UCT, it has become something much greater than a hobby, but a passion of sharing it with others.
I am currently in my 3rd year at UCT, studying a Bachelor of Music (majoring in composition). Piano is my main instrument of practical study with Music Education as an elective. Once I have completed my BMus degree, I am hoping to do a PGCE in foundation phase teaching and music.
Many times students come away from lessons unmotivated and anxious. I have heard numerous stories from adults on their past experiences learning piano (or whatever instrument it is, for that matter) that are quite disquieting. It is understandable how disheartening these experiences can be and the impact it has both on them and their perspective of music as a whole.
I would like to change this and be the contradiction.
It is my goal to harness an environment that is both fun and safe, rendering itself to a music making experience that is enjoyed and looked back on fondly - pupils coming away from lessons looking forward to the next one!
I can assure professionalism, but also comfortability. I can assure practical progress in your musical journey, but also patience and empathy.
A random fun fact: I can say, "Thank you" in 10 different languages! - but unfortunately this does not apply to the rest of my vocabulary, lessons are in the English medium.
Whether you have some knowledge of music already or are a beginner, 88yrs or 5yrs,it would be a privilege playing a part in your music-making adventure!

I have formal teaching experience both in giving piano lessons to various aged learners and facilitating music appreciation classes to little ones aged 1-4 years old. I have also gained teaching experience through participating in workshops and working with the Marimba Jam company as a substitute teacher: playing gigs and teaching the African marimba to groups of grades 6 – 12 students at various schools in the Southern suburbs. I have a love for children, passion for music and especially sharing it with others.
At the center of my lessons are fun and the pupil's overall enjoyment, in turn making the whole experience of learning an instrument hopefully one that can be fondly looked back on. Having said this, technique and practicalities are still very important too, and are not neglected.
Adapting to the student's learning style to achieve their best at interest, lessons are personalized and unique.
