About Ana

Hello! I'm Ana, and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to share my knowledge and passion for Portugal, the Portuguese language, and more with you! With a degree in business communication and a Master's degree in Marketing, I have a solid educational background that enhances my teaching expertise. Born and raised in Portugal, I bring an authentic perspective and a deep understanding of Portuguese culture to our lessons. Five years ago, I embarked on a new adventure and moved to the UK. This experience has given me a unique perspective on both Portuguese and British cultures, allowing me to bridge the gap and help you grasp the nuances of the language more effectively. I'm not just here to teach you Portuguese; I'm also excited to introduce you to the wonders of Portuguese cuisine. If you have an interest in cooking, I'll be more than happy to share traditional recipes and insights into our flavourful culinary traditions. Moreover, as a native Portuguese with a zest for travel, I can't wait to share with you all the must-visit places in Portugal. Olá tudo bem? If you've been dabbling with Duolingo or found yourself falling in love with Pastel de Natal, you're in the right place! I'll customise our lessons to match your goals and interests. No rigid curriculum here – just a relaxed and enjoyable language-learning experience. We'll cover everything from grammar and vocabulary to nailing that Portuguese pronunciation and understanding the culture. Expect a supportive and friendly atmosphere where you can learn at your own pace. I'll be there every step of the way, giving you feedback and guidance to help you shine. Deadly! Ana is an excellent teacher. She is patient and reliable. I have been having weekly lessons with her since December. Ana lets you try and work it out yourself first, and will help if you ask. Portuguese is a very complex language, with lots of tenses and rules. She is able to explain the "why" for which really helps me to learn and remember these rules. Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
I speak Portuguese as it is my mother tongue. I love teaching my language and sharing my culture across the globe.
Also, I have studied English, French, Spanish, and Japanese over the years.
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Zé Povinho - This fictional character symbolises the Portuguese working-class people, and it is the unofficial personification of Portugal.
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?
Like any other language, Portuguese has some words that just can't be translated. My favourite is "Saudade". This word represents the feeling of missing someone, but it's so much deeper than that. Expresses the pain, anxiety and sadness when someone is absent.
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Portuguese is widely spoken. You can speak Portuguese in Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe, and even in Sri Lanka, Goa, India and Macau and China!
What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?
Grammar is one of the most challenging aspects to learn, as some of the structures and verbs don't exist in other languages such as English. To help my students understand the grammar, I give them several examples, and we do exercises together.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
Most words have gender in Portuguese, so we need to use a different article, a or o, accordingly ( a for female and o for male words). It's always fun to hear when the students mix them up.
How has travel or a specific trip helped you increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
I now live in the UK, and living here was one of the most valuable experiences to learn a language.
