About Briony

I have worked in private tutoring since 2012, coaching in ESL in intensive sessions and excursions with adults. From 2014 I worked teaching EAL in the buzzing international environment of Barcelona in Spain, where my students have been from incredibly diverse international backgrounds. I was employed as Lead English Teacher at O’Sullivan’s Learning Academy on a full-time basis teaching students of all ages, including learning support for mainstream English, General English classes, Intensive Courses, official exams (Cambridge, APTIS), and Academic Purposes at university level, as well as giving support to new teachers on planning and resources. My students reported 100% success in achieving their required scores.

In my last role as Head of Studies for the national franchise What’s Up! Living English Spain, I was responsible for managing the academic department. This included 15 teaching hours a week with young people aged 15+, but focused on ensuring an up-to-date curriculum that engaged students in real world events, the recruitment and ongoing training of energetic teachers that would consistently ensure student participation in group work and collaborative tasks and the achievements of CEFR benchmarks in their classes, and also the organization of events that workshops that gave students warm and social spaces to simply have fun in English. These responsibilities have given me a deep knowledge of what motivates students in class, and also of the different approaches required for international students. Another duty of mine was the timetabling of classes for the school of over 650 students, which serves as an example of my organizational skills

About the lesson

I am passionate about creating a positive and dynamic learning experience for young people, and at the core of my teaching methodology sits a belief in authentic communication needed for real life situations, and the fostering of curiosity and excitement for acquiring new skills. I base classes around the topic needing study, and focus on speaking to practice pronunciation, aural confidence and expression. I teach vocabulary with visuals, use music and video for listening comprehension including current news and world affairs, as well as written activities and texts for comprehension. I like to get my students up and moving around as much as possible, and am always looking for real application for practicing newly acquired skills, such as excursions.

I have a cancellation policy of 24 hours. If the class is not cancelled before that time, the student will pay for the class, as I have declined another offer in order to do it.
