About Mary
I'm a fourth-year pre-med student with a strong academic background in biology and chemistry, and a passion for making science approachable and engaging. Beyond my coursework, I've spent time mentoring younger students, leading study groups, and tutoring peers in both one-on-one and group settings. I understand how challenging science can feel and I want to help to break it down in ways that make it clearer and more manageable. As a tutor, I focus on building a strong foundation in core concepts and fostering curiosity about the natural sciences. My approach is interactive and student-centered. I use questioning techniques, real-life examples, and analogies to help students internalize complex ideas. I assess prior knowledge and learning styles early on, and then adapt explanations using visual aids, diagrams, and hands-on activities (when possible). I also teach students how to study effectively, reinforcing critical thinking and problem-solving skills rather than rote memorization. For chemistry, I emphasize practice with equations and conceptual understanding; in biology, I focus on systems thinking and how biological processes connect.
Each session follows a structured format:
Warm-Up (5 min) – Quick review of the last session or a short quiz to refresh prior learning.
Concept Introduction (10–15 min) – I explain the new topic using engaging visuals or short videos, linking it to something the student already understands.
Interactive Practice (20 min) – Guided problem-solving, discussion questions, or diagram labeling.
Student-Led Summary (10 min) – The student explains the concept back to me in their own words to check for understanding.
Wrap-Up & Homework Support (10 min) – Address any class assignments and give tailored advice on how to approach independent study.
My tutoring is geared toward middle school students (Grades 6–8) and high school students (Grades 9–12). I adapt my teaching style depending on the curriculum and student needs, whether they're catching up, aiming for top grades, or preparing for competitive exams.
