I have known Professor Werner since 1988 when he was my lecturer in Astro Physics at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. During this time I was already pleasantly surprised with his ability to bring Physics to life and explain abstract concepts in a simple manner. In later years when I was employed as the coordinator of the Inductive Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrophotometer unit I personally got to know him as a dedicated colleague and ebullient lecturer that always took pride in the results of his students. Werner also excelled as one of the forerunners in the field of Nuclear Physics in the world and participated in many new developments. He has a broad knowledge of all the different interdisciplinary aspects of Physics and can entertain a class with numerous practical examples in order to enhance understanding of the theoretical work.
Lately, during the Covid Challenge, he has impressed me with the rate at which he acquired the proficient ability to perform online teaching by using the Zoom platform in conjunction with Applets, PowerPoint presentations, and other online resources. I have firsthand experience of
his teaching and am still reaping the fruits of his dedication.
