About Jonathan
I am looking for ways to do something meaningful with my language skills in my adopted city, Norwich. Until 2020 I had used my degree in Russian to work as an in-house translator and proofreader, while writing about culture and travel in the post-Soviet republics in my spare time. Staying at home during lockdown helped me to realise that I was happier not being tied to an office and company, and so for the last year I have been developing myself as a freelance translator, creative writer and teacher in the Russian-speaking world. At the moment I am working on projects in several countries, but would love to contribute something to the city that I live in.
For eight years at the start of my career I was a translator of business documents, first at law firms in Kiev, Ukraine, then at an event company in London. Since becoming a freelancer I have concentrated on creative projects, which are much closer to my heart. I am a committee member of the Eurasian Creative Guild, through which I translated the Russian-language novel ‘A Hundred Years on the Steppe’ by the Kazakh author Bayangali Alimzhanov. I have also translated a collection of poems by the Russian poet Ekaterina Khlebnikova on behalf of the Guild. Separately, I have been a translator for Natalya Stepanova, the famous Siberian spirit healer, while also proofreading Russian-language novels translated into English for Glagoslav Publications in the Netherlands.
