About Octavian

I am a full-time private tutor and Oxford-trained researcher, originally from the United States, specializing in SAT preparation for students targeting top US universities and Europe's leading business schools.
Being American is not incidental to how I teach the SAT. The test is built around American academic English — its reading passages, rhetorical structures, and writing conventions are second nature to me in a way that cannot be fully replicated. This matters most at the top of the score range, where the difference between 1450 and 1550 is almost always in the Reading and Writing section.
I have been tutoring the SAT since 2009, and my results at the highest score levels are documented. My students have gone on to Ivy League universities with results at the very top of the score range. One student achieved 1580 overall — a perfect 800 in Math and 780 in EBRW, placing him in the top 0.1% of test-takers worldwide, a score that was central to his successful Ivy League applications. Another, preparing simultaneously for the full IB, scored 42 points and secured Ivy League admission. These are not outliers. They reflect what is possible when a student combines the right preparation with genuine commitment.
My academic background is in Physics and Mathematics — an MSc from Paris, a BEng from Toulouse, and an MSc from Oxford — which means my SAT Math preparation goes well beyond test technique. I teach the underlying mathematics properly, so students are not just pattern-matching problems they have seen before but genuinely solving ones they have not. This is what produces scores at the very top of the range.
I also prepare students targeting Europe's leading business schools — Bocconi, ESADE, SSE Stockholm, Sciences Po, IE Madrid, and Frankfurt School — where competitive SAT scores typically sit between 1350 and 1500.
I work with a small number of students at a time and take on only those who are serious about their target score. If you are aiming for 1500+ and are willing to put in the work, get in touch.

SAT preparation with me starts with a full diagnostic test under timed conditions. Before we cover a single topic, I need to know exactly where the student's score is being lost — whether that is timing, specific question types, careless errors under pressure, or genuine gaps in knowledge. The entire study plan is built around that diagnosis. There is no generic syllabus.
For Math, I focus on the areas that consistently separate the 1400 student from the 1550+ student: advanced algebra, data interpretation, multi-step problem solving, and the discipline to avoid errors when it counts. I do not spend time on material the student already handles well. Every session is targeted.
For Reading and Writing, I teach a systematic approach to passage analysis and evidence-based questions that works reliably across every question type the SAT uses. As a native American English speaker with an Oxford research background, I bring a rare combination to EBRW prep: deep instinctive feel for the language the test is written in, and rigorous analytical method built over years of academic work. Strong EBRW scores are not about reading speed or vocabulary — they are about a learned method applied consistently. That is what I teach.
I structure sessions of 2h30 to 3 hours, and this is deliberate. The SAT is 2 hours and 14 minutes of continuous, high-intensity testing. A student who has only ever worked in one-hour increments will hit a concentration wall at exactly the wrong moment on test day. My sessions are designed to build the mental endurance the exam demands — so that 2h14 feels entirely within a student's normal range by the time they sit the real test. Stamina is a trainable skill, and most tutors never train it.
Students receive a personalised study plan with weekly targets, full-length practice tests at regular intervals, and a written report after each session covering performance, identified weaknesses, and exactly what to work on before next time. Progress is measurable from the first month.
I teach online and in person across London. I have a strict no-cancellation policy for cancellations under 24 hours — consistent scheduling is essential for meaningful score improvement, and a missed slot cannot be offered to another student.
