About Anya Isabel
I am currently a sophomore at Eugene Lang College and am aspiring to be an educator and make changes to the current education system in the U.S. I've always loved teaching because I love seeing kids find their power and passion in their studies. I have worked as a tutor and mentor throughout high school, in math, arts, and science. I predominantly teach middle school and high school students, however, I have experience working with 5th and 6th graders via a Summer Enrichment Program offered by my former high school.

In complete honesty, I am a proud nerd. I love learning, and seeing how so many different subjects connect to one another. I know mathematics can be a daunting subject, however, I think there is so much power to be found in learning math. I strive to show my students that their success in mathematics is not just about the arithmetic, but about the method they use to find the answers. Life is full of difficult problems that we may not always have the solution to. However, just like in math, there are steps that we may take in order to achieve what we want, whether it's to solve an equation find 'y' or get into college. Algebra is the basis for so many branches of mathematics, and it is crucial to a student's education. My goal is not to turn my students into mathematicians, but rather, to help them see that math does not have to be a frustrating subject that makes them want to rush through school. Depending on the student and the learning method that helps them the most, I like to incorporate visual aids (i.e. flashcards, blocks, drawings) and access to mini whiteboards in my lessons to help create a fun and accessible classroom vibe, with the one-on-one attention students may need to truly navigate the material.

I go to school in the NYU District and live in Central Harlem. I am willing to travel to locations between Washington Heights and East Village for a $6 travel fee. I am also offering for students to meet me at my The New School University, where I attend school. These lessons would be in the University Center, which is a private building owned by the university. Student ID is required, but this is a great location if students are looking to be in an academic setting outside of a traditional classroom. In-person lessons require 24-hour advanced notice. Lessons via webcam (i.e. Skype) are not limited by location and do not include a travel fee. For the first lesson, I prefer to meet in person so I can get to know both the student and parents/guardians and they can meet me. It is important to me that there is a mutual understanding of how sessions will be conducted and allow for an icebreaker period.
