I specialise in providing bespoke 1:1 mentoring for young people with SEND. Mentoring is based around a child’s interests; everything from video games to music production to literature and everything between can be used as an activity through which we can work together.
Sessions are low demand and can work towards a variety of goals including improving mental health, introducing educational content (at the individual’s pace) and re-engaging with education.
I don't believe any child is lazy or does not want to learn. I believe they have simply not been given the opportunity to find the approaches which allow them to do so!
I am a strong advocate for working under the social model of disability, which believes that it is not an individual’s differences that pose barriers to them, but rather society’s inability to understand and adapt to these differences.
Sessions can integrate interventions identified by Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals to help your child integrate these into their daily lives.
I can provide academic content in sessions for many subjects. However, I do not teach these subjects to exam standard. Should you wish to pursue a qualification in a subject my sessions would need to complement other tuition on the content.
If you’d like to see if mentoring is right for your child please get in touch for a free 30 minute consultation.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Tom has worked with my son for the past four and a half years, during which time he has been an invaluable part of his journey.
He has exceptional sensitivity and understanding of young people, particularly those who have experienced trauma within education.
At the start, my son was unable to communicate with educational professionals at all, with the sole exception of Tom. He built a deep and lasting relationship of trust, and it helped my son begin learning again.
Perhaps most remarkably, he achieved this entirely online, without my son’s camera ever being switched on. He successfully engaged and supported a 12 year old with situational mutism without even being able to see his facial expressions or body language. That takes an extraordinary level of sensitivity, patience and intuition.
Tom understands that meaningful learning begins with trust. He meets young people where they are, respects their individuality and gently builds their confidence and capacity to engage.
I cannot recommend him highly enough. He is not only an excellent educator but an exceptionally kind and generous person. My son loves his sessions with Tom; they are the highlight of his week.
Tom is an amazing mentor, who is understanding, caring and adapts his sessions to the needs of the individual, making them feel at ease. He is also very supportive to parents and I feel lucky to have him on board.
