About Joshua
As mentioned, I have received official training from UNC-CH to tutor mathematics and physics. During my time at this institution, I received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and helped many students succeed in their classes. I am currently working on research in fluid mechanics, and I intend to apply for PhD programs in Mathematics next autumn. Many students find math dull and difficult, but as someone who has completed a full undergraduate curriculum in mathematics, I have the perspective to see its beauty through the complexity. This is a perspective that I always try to share with my tutees, and it brings me great joy to see students gain confidence in their abilities as well as an appreciation for the diverse field of math.

I have received a full semester of training from UNC-CH in optimal techniques for tutoring and learning. These include, but are not limited to:
Metacognition: awareness of the learning process as it occurs
Elaborative interrogation: tutoring through asking questions. Tutees do most of the talking in my sessions, and I simply serve as a guide as the student makes realizations on their own. This is, by far, the most effective way for students to digest new content.
Repetition: The only way to learn mathematics is to do it many times. I foster a collaborative environment with students where we work together to solve problems, rather than giving answers that will be forgotten by the end of the session.
I am able to tutor any high school math or physics class, although I am most experienced with the typical junior/senior year classes such as trigonometry, precalculus, introductory mechanics, and electromagnetism. I also can tutor most college-level math classes as well, including calculus, differential equations, and discrete math. I have taken 11 college level math classes and excelled in each one, so I have recent experience in figuring out what students need to be successful in these classes.
