About Laurence
An engineer by trade, I held positions in high-tech development for ~20 years. Telecommunications was my primary focus, along with automotive technology. For the past 10 years, I have managed my own company providing energy efficiency and sustainability solutions for industrial facilities.
Throughout my career I have continued to be involved in mathematics and instruction of technical subjects. I work with middle school, high school, and college students as well as working adults. I have experience in formal classroom settings and individual tutoring, test preparation at many levels, etc. I teach because I enjoy it, and because it is one way I can contribute to individuals and communities overall.
I currently live in Nashua, NH. I play a variety of musical instruments and write original music. Hiking and canoeing in the mountains are favorite activities. Exploring new places is something I never get tired of pursuing.

I have taught mathematics at many different levels in a wide variety of settings. Regardless of age and background - whether high school algebra-trig classes, tutoring middle school students, or university undergraduate level courses - there are some truths about the study and advancement of mathematic and analytical thinking that are pervasive.
Too often, the overriding emphasis is on the machinery and mechanics of problem-solving. These skills are important to be sure. But an understanding of the concepts at the heart of a particular type of problem and solution method is just as critical to developing confidence and proficiency. When fundamental principles are communicated, and placed into the context of a specific challenge, the instinct and ability to apply specific tools will develop more quickly and be retained more easily. Understanding the “idea” of a solution method is critical to mastery.
We will get at the “Why” - why in the world is this type of problem relevant, or valuable?
We will also emphasize the “What” - what type of problem are we facing, and what tools and methods are useful for tackling it?
We will then address the “How” - how do I apply methods and skills to solve the problem?
I enjoy working with all ages of middle school, high school, and early college level students, as well as adults. Specific subjects, test prep, general review and support are all possible. My goal is to create a framework and learning environment that are rewarding and effective for my students.
