About Proma

I am a BSc Psychology Graduate. I am currently a Science trainee teacher doing my PGCE year. I already teach KS3 and KS4 (GCSE) Chemistry, Biology and Physics and also KS5 (A-Level) Biology. I also studied Chemistry, Biology and Psychology at A-Levels so I understand the pressure and struggles individuals face during this period of their life. I have been tutoring GCSE and A-Level students since 2016 so I have a lot of prior experience. It is my passion to help students excel and achieve the grades that they are capable of achieving.

My initial degree in Psychology BSc has provided me a range of mandatory skills that I believe is very useful in teaching. For example, learning to work as part of a team during my university has enabled me to understand the importance of having other people there to support you and provide ideas to essentially develop your thinking into an open mindset. My degree has also provided me with important insight into the necessity of building relationships and how this impacts development of children. This ultimately allows me to be a better teacher as the key to successful teaching is building relationships with the students so they they trust you with their learning and feel safe in their environment.

So far during my PGCE I have only had experience in one school. The second experience will take place after Christmas. The schools placement has provided me with many opportunities. My placement included teaching KS3 (Years 7, 8, 9), KS4 (Year 10) and KS5 (Y12) in a range of science subject including biology and chemistry. During my placement i have understood the intricacies of national curriculum and the importance of preparing students for exams whilst also allowing students room to have fun and enjoy their learning. During my time at my first placement I have learnt that it is important to ensure that all students are engaged in their education and understand the importance of it whilst also giving them challenges to allow them enhance their learning capacity and take it above and beyond. I believe that in order for students to excel it is important that they are able to enjoy their learning so that they can remain engaged. It is also essential to provide students with the chance to push themselves to a higher level.

My PGCE has given me the opportunity to have an insight into many different learning theories, different types of assessments and even the different type of lessons that can be made. I believe that all the learning theories have some relevance to teaching in one way or another. The theory that resonates most with me is the cognitive load theory which Dylan William has described as ‘the single most important thing for teachers to know’. It is essential for teachers to understand how young minds work so that we are not overloading them with new knowledge that their working memory cannot convert into long term memory. As a result, by understanding the strategies that we can use to aid for maximum learning has allowed me to ultimately be a better and more efficient teacher.
