About Elza

My qualifications include a Masters Degree in Linguistics (First), the RSA Cert in TEFLA (now known as CELTA), Trinity Diploma in TEFL and the IH Certificate in Teaching Business English (LCCIEB). I also have a background in Tourism and Customer Services (BA).

I have been teaching EFL/ESOL for over 30 years in the UK and abroad (23 years in the UK, the rest mainly in Spain). I have given classes in General and Business English and prepared students for all the Cambridge (KET, PET, FC, CAE and CPE) and Trinity exams (Skills for Life, GESE for Residency Tests) as well as IELTS. I have worked with students from all over the world, most of them adults, but I have taught all ages from as young as 4 (Spain).

I have been involved in syllabus planning and course design (created and ran my own course in English for Tourism at a UK college for many years). I have attended countless training sessions and also given several of my own for EFL teachers (UK and Spain).

I am a specialist in the teaching of Business English having completed a course at IH (International House) London and I have worked with clients from companies such as LG, INC Research and TAM (Brazilian Airlines).

I also have a background in music and my other special area is the teaching of pronunciation, which I have held seminars on at various IH-schools in Spain.

About the lesson

As an avid language-learner myself, I can fully identify with the difficulties students face but my many years of experience (as a learner as well as a teacher) have taught me how best to deal with them.

I believe we learn things easier and more deeply when we connect with them emotionally so throughout my teaching career I have put the focus on the student, their needs, interests and personal goals and I have always chosen materials or created my own accordingly.

Language-learning is a kind of memory-exercise so I make sure that each one of my lessons includes some revision and repetition. I also like using technology to bring in 'the real world' and encourage meaningful communication. I aim to maximise students’ talking time during the lessons so I always make sure that they are engaging, relaxed and fun.
