About Rebecca
I am a violinist with an intermediate level foundation in piano. I have performed in a variety of formats, including orchestras, NYSSMA, and college level juries. I have significant experience working with children with and without disabilities, both as a camp counselor and, most recently, as a student music therapist. As a student music therapist, I was able to observe group sessions, co-lead, and even create some of my own musical interventions to help each child meet specific objectives, all of which required a lot of singing and improvisation while simultaneously maintaining your presence and overall control of the group. Between working as a camp counselor and a student music therapist, I have worked with children between the ages of 2.5-9.

I want to start off with a brief explanation of my overall philosophy. I do not view a student-teacher relationship as one person above the other, but instead as an equal partnership between all parties involved. If you or your child is struggling with a specific exercise or technique, please do tell me! I will modify the plan accordingly and focus on the areas that require more lesson time. Parents and/or guardians are also welcome to share their thoughts or concerns with me as well in order to provide the best musical experience for your child! Contact information will be firmly established following the first meeting if lessons are expected to continue.
I have provided a general methodology to give an idea of what music essentials I plan to teach throughout the course of lessons below:
*NYSSMA preparation available for both long term and short term students.*
I believe in the importance of reading music as essential to the foundation of playing any instrument. I can teach how to read music in multiple different clefs (Treble, Bass, Alto, Tenor), with Treble and Bass as my strong suit. The fundamentals of reading music begin with an understanding of these two clefs, namely the Treble clef, which is used for writing violin music. Gaining an understanding of the clefs, note names, and basic rhythms will decrease the amount of difficulty and stress the student may have while actually learning to play the instrument. This also builds a foundation for sight reading, which I have years worth of experience in.
As is required of most instruments, it is the job of the instructor to teach the student WHERE the notes are located on their instrument. An appropriate amount of time will be spent on this part of the process, adjusting the lesson plan based on the needs of each individual student. I highly recommend getting violin tape for beginners, which I can put on for the student. These tapes provide a visual aid for the student so they can easily locate notes on each string until they feel confident enough to play without the tapes as a guide. Violin tape is fairly cheap and can be found for about $10 or less on Amazon and other platforms.
While singing is not necessarily required at the early stages of learning an instrument (especially for children), being able to sing what you are playing helps the student with recognizing incorrect or out of tune notes and knowing how to correct the mistake. A large part of my musical education has consisted of sight singing (with fixed or movable Do), along with basic concepts of theory such as scales, intervals, and the identification of chords.
Lastly, I want to establish that I am willing and able to teach more than just classical repertoire if so desired. I will still use them as a part of the learning process, but the frequency of use will change depending on the wants and needs of the student. If there is a particular song that the student desires to learn, I can help them with that. A lot of sheet music can be found for free on the internet or on IMSLP.
