About Ashley

Hi, I’m Ashley, a Melbourne-based secondary teacher with a passion for helping students understand people, societies and the world around them. I am fully registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and am in my fifth year of teaching, with experience teaching VCE.

I hold a Bachelor of International Studies with a History minor and a Master of Teaching specializing in Humanities and Japanese. I offer Humanities tutoring for students in Years 7 to 12, including support in History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, Business and Economics, and Sociology.

Alongside classroom teaching, I co-lead the development of a new Year 9 Humanities curriculum and mentor students and pre-service teachers. These roles have strengthened my ability to explain challenging ideas, provide constructive feedback and support students with different learning needs.

I enjoy teaching Humanities because it encourages students to ask questions, consider different perspectives and make connections between their learning and everyday life. Whether exploring historical change, social inequality, environmental challenges or business decisions, I want students to understand why their learning matters.

I tutor because individual attention can help students overcome barriers that are difficult to address in a busy classroom. Some students know the content but struggle to express their ideas in writing. Others need support breaking down questions, understanding evidence or developing effective study habits. I enjoy helping students identify these challenges and work through them step by step.

My approach is patient, approachable and encouraging. I create a respectful environment where students can ask questions, make mistakes and build confidence without feeling judged. Whether you are strengthening your foundations or preparing for Year 12 assessments, my goal is to help you become a more confident, capable and independent learner.

My Humanities lessons help students understand the world around them while building confidence in critical thinking, research and written communication. I offer personalised tutoring for Years 7 to 12, including VCE, across History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, Business and Economics, and Sociology.

Each lesson is tailored to the student’s subjects, schoolwork and learning goals. I identify their strengths and areas needing support, then use clear explanations, worked examples, discussion and guided practice to develop their understanding. Students receive practical feedback and opportunities to apply their learning independently.

Lessons can focus on:

• History: understanding events, causes and consequences, comparing perspectives, analysing sources and constructing evidence-based arguments.
• Geography: explaining geographical processes, interpreting maps and graphs, analysing data, applying case studies and developing fieldwork reports.
• Civics and Citizenship: understanding democracy, parliament, laws, rights and responsibilities, and applying concepts to contemporary issues.
• Business and Economics: understanding business decisions, entrepreneurship, consumer behaviour and economic concepts, and applying knowledge to case studies.
• Sociology: exploring social relationships, institutions, culture, identity and inequality, applying sociological concepts and analysing evidence.
• VCE preparation: consolidating subject knowledge, interpreting command terms, preparing for SACs and examinations, and practising structured responses under timed conditions.
• Writing and study skills: planning essays, developing analytical paragraphs, selecting relevant evidence, organising revision and improving time management.

Sessions typically run for 60 minutes and include a review of previous learning, focused teaching and practice, followed by feedback and clear next steps. Students are encouraged to bring school resources, assessment instructions and teacher feedback so our sessions address their current learning needs.

I am a fully VIT registered secondary teacher in my fifth year of teaching, with experience teaching VCE. I hold a Master of Teaching specialising in Humanities and Japanese, and a Bachelor of International Studies with a History minor. I also co-lead the development of a new Year 9 Humanities curriculum.

My approach is patient, encouraging and appropriately challenging. Whether students need help understanding a difficult concept, improving their written responses or preparing for Year 12 assessments, I support them to build confidence and take greater ownership of their learning.
