About Alfie

As somebody who has only just completed their GCSE’s, not only am I up-to-date with the syllabi, knowing the secrets to smashing the exams, but I also remember the struggles of GCSE’s. This helps me to relate to the difficulties students face, allowing me to aid them in overcoming challenges by using the strategies and techniques that were key in my own journey to achieving all 9’s at GCSE.

About the lesson

I like to start the lesson with a 5 minute recap activity testing what we learnt last session, then in the lesson itself I like to focus on practice questions.
Initially, I guide students through an exam style question, making a checklist of things we should include in the answer. Then using the checklist we have made, I ask students to attempt a similar question.
After pupils have had a go at answering, I ask them to compare their response with the mark scheme/model answer and tell me what they think is good about their answer and how they could learn from the exemplar answer. Following this review, we add to the checklist so that the next time we come to answering that style of question the student knows exactly what they need to get full marks next time.

An additional benefit of these checklists are that they are in flashcard format and so can be used for quick easy revision.

Besides practice questions, I like to show students videos to make the lessons more engaging and varied.

I kindly ask that any cancellations be made at least 2 hours in advance. For cancellations made within 2 hours of the scheduled lesson, I would appreciate a contribution of half the lesson fee (£9) to help cover preparation time.

Our daughter, who is in year 10, has had a number of sessions with Alfie in Chemistry. She wasn't confident in the area but as a result of his calm approach, clear direction and targeted tutoring, she went on to achieve 73% in her next mid year test and now feels so much more confident and actually likes the subject!
