About Nicolas-James

Hello everyone! My name is Nicolas-James but I'm mainly known as NJ by my friends and family. I have finished Year 11 and going into Year 12. I have always been passionate about maths and chemistry and I've had experience teaching a few Year 9's and 10s and a couple of Year 11s and I've managed to help them score much higher in tests/exams and in mocks. In my GCSE's, I got a 9 in Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, French an A in additional maths, and Grades 7-9 in all my other GCSE Subjects. As I've just finished all of my GCSE's all of the content for Maths and Chemistry are still intact as I know all of the content. Ive also finished and completed LAMDA: Examination in Public Speaking and so I understand how to communicate effectively and to respond in the best possible way to all students as because I'm still am a student, I understand how it feels as learning new content or facing the pressure of exams/tests is quite scary; I believe patience is key when teaching and being calm. I'm also starting a level maths, chemistry, biology in September as I move into Year 12 and I'm extremely excited!

I have used interactive activities as a great way to teach others the content, as for some, it makes learning more enjoyable. When teaching, I first go over the specification of the topic to show what the student needs to know, then we tackle from topic to topic increasing in difficulty for questions, following the specification to make sure no information or content is missed out as it's extremely important to grasp the content before moving onto exam style question as it'll be hard to understand the topic and each new content could potentially contain information from the previous topic which is essential to attain before moving on with learning the course. I also show the best ways to revise such as making Flashcards for active recall and I give the best websites from where to get flashcards for revision as some students might potentially struggle to make flashcards but even if the student struggles I offer ways on how to use hand made flashcards effectively, exam-style papers, and questions as these are key to use to get those top grades as well, so Ill be showing the student where are the best websites to get these. At the end of each unit or topic, I'll give an assessment to review how much the student has understood of the topic and what we need to review which was seen as the most challenging before moving on with the course and learning so there's no gaps when learning more difficult concepts. I also share my tips and tricks to help score high grades such as how to improve exam technique as this is key to score an 8 or 9 especially in (I)GCSE Chemistry. I also do lessons based on exam strategies and do lots of practice exam papers to help students become familiar with the scheme of work, so when they tackle mocks/exams, they will understand what the examiner is looking for when awarding you marks. Furthermore, we will focus on improving time management as this is important to make sure students manage their time effectively. Coming from a student such as myself, I understand the impacts of anxiety and I’ll be teaching and showing the best ways to combat anxiety to help perform better in exams. I'm extremely patient when teaching students as everyone works and learns at different speeds and this is completely normal; I believe being patient is key when teaching and calm as building a student's self-esteem is crucial to score top marks! I offer between 45 minutes and an hour lessons but am flexible
