About Alann

I am an artist forged in the tension between worlds. Formally trained in European academies, I was creatively liberated by indigenous art, leading to a 35-year global practice. This path is not simple. I have faced hard questions about inspiration and identity head-on—from critics and within.
My work, and now my teaching, grapples with this: how do we honor influences without appropriation? How do we find our own voice in a global tapestry? I guide students through this complex terrain, focusing on authentic personal storytelling as the only true compass.

My Teaching Philosophy:

A Note on Inspiration & Tradition: My journey has been a conscious move away from academic European technique toward the intuitive power of global folk art. I was challenged on this path long ago by South American artists and thinkers, forcing me to deeply question the line between inspiration and appropriation. Therefore, I do not teach classical European oil painting, academic figure drawing, or how to make "tribal-style" art.

What I offer is a different path: If you are from a tradition-rich community and feel the pull of modern or Western art, I won't teach you to replace your heritage. Instead, I can help you analyze and understand the principles behind both your native visual language and new styles you encounter. We explore how to create a conscious, personal synthesis—a way to honour your roots while expressing your contemporary individual voice, without imitation.

If you feel disconnected from any artistic tradition and are intimidated by classical training, I provide tools to start from your own stories. In all cases, we focus on art as authentic personal document. My studio is a space for this complex, respectful dialogue.

My standard session is an in-depth, 75-minute meeting priced at $50. I've found this extended time is essential for us to move beyond the surface, dive into meaningful creative work, and have room for reflective conversation without feeling rushed. This allows us to properly begin the journey of unlocking your unique visual voice.

About the lesson

Inspired by my journey from academic pressure to the liberating simplicity of indigenous art, my lessons are a dialogue. We explore your world through guided, playful exercises—using pencil, ink, or basic colors—to unlock a style that is authentically yours. I provide a supportive framework where mistakes are discoveries, and the goal is not realism, but resonant, personal expression. Technique is gently woven in to support your vision.
