About Lewis

TEFL-Qualified.
Over 500+ hours teaching 1-1 online conversational English classes.
M.Sci Astrophysics. RADAR Engineer.
Also speak French and Spanish. Just started Japanese.

I've had students from Saudi Arabia, China, Taiwan and Brazil who have gone on to pass their IELTS and TOEFL exams.
Their bad habits and old mistakes quickly disappear after time with me.

Often I hear: "nobody ever told me it was wrong!" when I highlight an error that a student makes repeatedly. Students are grateful for my attentiveness.

I'm also a very self-aware person which really helps me alter my teaching style to individual students.

Are you intermediate or advanced and looking to improve your English conversation skills with structured and focussed conversation classes? Do you care about speaking correctly and naturally?

You will talk a lot in my classes, much more than I will.

Students usually know their grammar. It just becomes useless when they start speaking because they don’t have native speakers around to correct them properly, and usually focussed on grammar only at school.
To improve students speaking ability and make lasting changes, I correct in a way designed to improve student awareness. I don’t correct students every time. I often ask them questions to recognise their own mistakes. Many teachers do not correct this way. Sometimes students have bad habits which we’ll work on together to clean up.

I have a TEFL (not TOEFL....) qualification with over 500 hours private conversational online teaching experience.
My MSc in Physics and Astronomy is from Glasgow University in Scotland.
I speak French and Spanish and recently started Japanese.

The three parts of the class are as follows, generally. This may change depending on your goals:
1) Article Discussion – I’ll send you articles to prepare in advance so we have a deep talking point and new vocabulary. We will take care of grammar issues as they pop up, and if you need extra help with a particular point, we will focus on it.
2) On-The-Spot Questions – Since you’ll be having conversations in real life, we better practice speaking on-the-spot. If you want to connect with people, you better be able to express yourself when answering more complicated questions than “what do you do?” The on-the-spot questions will have you expressing things you hadn’t thought about before and telling old stories for the first time. You’ll also be encouraged to use a variety of tenses, complex sentences and compare/contrast structures. Once the class is over, we’ll take any particularly interesting questions and I’ll ask you to sit down and think more deeply about the topic and prepare a deeper answer to present to me. I won’t ask you to MEMORISE this answer, but merely to prepare some deeper points and try your best to express them naturally in the next class.
3) Free Talk – We’re both human beings with interests and passions. The natural flow of a conversation is often different to a structured, focussed lesson. The conversation can jump between topics of interest rapidly, people make jokes, people interject and interrupt… It’s important to get some practice responding appropriately to things other people say, and understanding the flow of conversation with another at a real pace. Free-talk conversations are always very balanced as I’m a self-aware person. It also gives the student a chance to practice asking questions and being inquisitive (curious.)
I also recommend joining a local “Toastmasters” public speaking group. Most of these clubs are in English so a great place to practice and build a skill at the same time.
Also, if you like the tune at the end, my friend made it for me, you can find his Youtube channel Robthehen.
