About John

Hello! I am John, a dedicated and experienced mathematics tutor with a strong academic background and a passion for teaching. I hold a degree in Economics from the University of Nottingham and am currently writing my master's thesis at De Montfort University. My professional journey includes leading Action Research projects for the Centres for Excellence in Mathematics at Leicester College, focusing on Problem Solving and Assessment for Learning.

I am an avid student at heart, always eager to expand my knowledge and skills. Before my degree at Nottingham, I completed a short course in Economics at Oxford. I have also pursued a certificate in the social sciences through the Open University, studied AI online through Stanford University, and completed a course in engaging families in education through Harvard (online too). My continuous pursuit of learning reflects my commitment to education and my enthusiasm for staying current with the latest developments in various fields.

I specialise in private and personalised one-to-one mathematics tutoring, covering GCSE Mathematics, Access to Mathematics, and bridging KS3 to GCSE as well as GCSE to A-Level. My approach is student-centred, ensuring that each session is tailored to meet the unique needs and learning styles of my students. By fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment, I aim to build confidence and competence in mathematics for all my students.

My teaching methodology is grounded in the principles of active learning and personalised instruction. Each lesson is designed to be interactive and engaging, encouraging students to actively participate and take ownership of their learning. Here’s what you can expect from a typical lesson with me:

Assessment and Goal Setting: Each session begins with a brief assessment to identify the student's current understanding and areas for improvement. Together, we set clear, achievable goals for our lessons.

Concept Exploration: I explain mathematical concepts using real-world examples and visual aids, making abstract ideas more concrete and understandable.

Interactive Problem Solving: Students are guided through problem-solving exercises, where they apply concepts to various scenarios. I provide support and hints as needed, encouraging independent thinking and resilience.

Personalised Feedback and Review: After each exercise, we review the solutions together, discussing any errors and understanding the correct approach. This immediate feedback helps reinforce learning and build confidence.

Homework and Practice: To consolidate learning, I provide tailored homework assignments that target specific areas for improvement. These are designed to challenge students and deepen their understanding.

Progress Tracking: I keep detailed records of each student's progress, regularly updating goals and strategies to ensure continuous improvement.

My unique blend of expertise, personalised attention, and commitment to student success sets me apart as a tutor. I am dedicated to helping each student not only achieve their academic goals but also develop a genuine appreciation for mathematics. Let's work together to unlock your full potential in maths!
