About the lesson
I am an experienced teacher (17 years) & musician. I teach maths as the science of patterns; these patterns can be beautiful and pop up all around us in our everyday lives: within music, architecture, textiles, physics & computer algorithms, to name a few.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach maths, physics and music technology. I teach many different aspects of music: production, theory, performance, recording and analysis.
- How much do you charge?
- When are you available?
My timetable is quite flexible. I am happy to work evenings and weekends but weekdays are preferable.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
The majority of my students are between the ages of 9-18, but I also teach older students who are working towards degrees and teaching qualifications.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE, A/S-level, A-level, QTS (Qualified Teaching Status) numeracy, 11+ school entrance exams (verbal/non-verbal reasoning also) and SATs
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I use Skype and Zoom for online sessions, and use the interactive whiteboard BitPaper to explain concepts & techniques visually.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
The more you understand a subject, the less you actually have to memorise. Even times tables, which are generally taught by rote, can be broken down into very clear patterns. Maths is the science of patterns, and numbers are just a tool for quantifying these patterns. I really enjoy inspiring my students to find beauty within these patterns, which hopefully makes the subject easier to understand.
- Junior Cycle
- Transition Year
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching for 17 years. I have prepared students for many different exams, including GCSEs, A-Levels, 11+, QTS Numeracy, SATs, but I also teach students over the course of many years to boost their confidence and help them enjoy their studies.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Deadly! Great tutor!

- Camilo's response : Olivia was a pleasure to teach
Deadly! Gabriel had a great first lesson with Camilo. So reassuring to know Gabriel has someone to guide him through what will be a lot of hard work trying to catch up on missing a whole year of physics in time to take the IGCSE next summer. Argh!! Thank goodness for Camilo!!
- Camilo's response : Gabriel (Natasha’s son) attended his lesson punctually and well prepared. He was eager to learn about how the online whiteboard works and was a fantastic student. I look forward to working with him further
Deadly! Camilo has been an excellent tutor! My son is always looking forward to his lessons and he enjoys the attention and positive interactions with Camilo. Camilo has boosted my son’s confidence in Maths as he is preparing for his GCSE’s. Really impressed with his kindness, encouragement and his ability to create a positive relationship with my son! Thanks Camilo!
- Camilo's response : Frosso communicated clearly and quickly to arrange the first session, and got to grips with the technology easily. Her son was focussed and a pleasure to teach.

We were looking for a tutor quickly for my son's Math's GCSE. Set up with Camilo was very easy and my son immediately built a good rapport and understanding . There was good two way communication and was impressed with how Camilo quickly understood areas of concern and addressed them patiently. After each session I felt my son came out with renewed vigor and confidence. Camilo is an excellent tutor and would definitely recommend his services.. Binoy
Camilo has been teaching my son both G.C.S.E and A'level maths as well as some physics. He came to us originally through another teaching platform. He is patient, thorough and kind, and an excellent teacher. My son has gained in confidence and self belief and is now doing well in maths at school. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.
Camilo has helped our son with his maths. This has been a very useful and enjoyable experience for him and I can whole heartedly recommend Camilo as a maths tutor.
Camilo tutored our son in preparation for his Maths GCSE. He has great subject knowledge as well as a passion for Maths, is creative in his thinking and very patient and methodological in his explanations. He's also a really nice guy :-) We know Camilo's guidance had a big part in our son receiving an 8 in his final exam. We recommend him wholeheartedly.
Camilo was my daughters Maths tutor throughout the run up to her GCSEs in 2019, for around a year in total.
I can highly recommend him as a tutor and my daughter benefitted from regular tutorials with him.
He was flexible and would sometimes help with homework, or nearer exam time go through past papers and helping with especially difficult topics. He was able to explain complex concepts which enabled her to gain in confidence as she got nearer to the actual exams.
He also taught her good exam technique and helped her generally feel much less anxious about the whole process.
He was reliable and punctual and and the end result was she went from being predicted a 4 in the Higher paper to actually achieving a solid grade 6 in her actual exam, which she was delighted with.

Before Camilo, I was struggling to engage with maths and started to under-perform in exams. Camilo helped me for around 2 years and was able to break down the complicated maths into simple understandable steps which I was then able to practise and apply in mocks exam questions he provided. Camilo’s brilliant teaching and ability to make maths an enjoyable experienced allowed me to go from struggling to get a C, to achieving an A in Maths GCSE. For anyone wanting to excel in Maths, I would highly recommend Camilo.
Camilo is very accomplished, as a mathematician, as a musician and as a sound engineer. He has much teaching experience, and is relaxed, very focussed and a good listener.
I came to know him as his tutor in many subjects, 20 years ago, but in many fields he has outgrown my knowledge.
I recommend him as a tutor, and as an encourager of studying and taking a delight in learning. He is a very positive presence.
I asked Camilo to start tutoring my daughter when I was told, six weeks before her IGCSE Maths examination, that she had little chance of passing the exam! Camilo worked wonders, he calmed my stressed daughter down and re-instilled her confidence and love of the subject. My daughter achieved a B in her exam and is happily studying for her A levels. I really cannot recommend Camilo and his tutoring methods highly enough.
Camilo tutored my son for 2 years, whilst he was in the middle of his GCSE Maths course. My son was not enjoying maths at school and needed support and inspiration. With Camilo's help he managed to achieve an A* and, to my surprise, even chose to carry on studying Maths to A/S level, where he got an A. Camilo is a very calm and extremely friendly presence, he communicates very well and is always punctual. Without a doubt, having sessions with him has helped my son gain confidence and ability.
Unlike my maths teacher at school, Camilo didnt get stressed when I asked for help when I was stuck. He had an excellent knowledge of the Maths syllabus and he helped me feel more confident. He is very friendly and I felt very safe with him. He never made me feel stupid and calmed my panicking. Thanks so much Cam! I got a good B in my exam after being told I would fail it!!!
Camilo has greatly increased my ability and enthusiasm for maths and I would not have been able to achieve my GCSE grade 5 without him. His down to earth and chilled teaching style made it very easy to learn from him. Never once was his large knowledge for the subject presented as patronising when explaining topics, instead he was easy to relate to and overall a very patient teacher who I would recommend to all students who are struggling with maths.

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I have been passionate about mathematics and music since early childhood. My mum remembers me practicing my sums whilst in the bath at the age of 4, and I started playing the piano when I was 9. I started my career as a tutor when I was 18 years old, after finishing secondary school.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I love teaching maths and encourage my students to understand it as the science of patterns, to use their visual and spatial instincts to guide the more conventional analytical methods. I enjoy the elegance of pure mathematics but also think it's important to help students to see how these abstract concepts can be applied to real-world problems, e.g. within music, architecture, textiles, computer science and even cooking.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
I had many wonderful teachers growing up, and I am still friends with some of them. I have a few music teachers who I see quite regularly, and one of them was also a maths teacher of mine. His name is Lawrence Ball and he would use our maths lessons as a springboard into other subjects such as music composition, the physics of sound and even philosophy.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Patience, generosity of spirit and clear communication. A deep understanding of your subject is of course essential and years of teaching experience is invaluable.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
When I was 9 years old I loved maths and thought I was pretty good at it, but when I was assessed by a Kumon (Japanese system of education) professional I was only slightly above average for my age. This was because they took into account the amount of time it took me to answer the questions, and I was quite slow because I was methodical and thorough in my approach. This taught me that it is important to strike a balance between accuracy and speed; they are both required in equal measure in order to develop confidence and achieve one's potential.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
It was a challenge for me to speed up my working. It's not a skill that came naturally to me, especially as I take pride in being thorough and detailed when solving problems. However with regular timed practice, which is fundamental to the Japanese Kumon system, and can be quite repetitive, I was able to increase my speed without compromising my accuracy.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I am passionate about life-long learning. When we are young we can soak up information and new ideas more easily, but I believe it is possible to learn new things throughout one's adult life also. This not only inspires enthusiasm and wonder for the world around us, but has also been proven to fend off dementia, whether it is learning a new language, a musical instrument or new maths skills!
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)
I have been teaching for half my life (17 years) and don't ever want to stop. Sharing my knowledge and experience with my students brings me a huge sense of wellbeing and I love the idea that we are all standing on the shoulder of giants: our ancestors were ingenious and their discoveries enrich and inspire our lives in the modern world. I hope that people will look back at my teaching legacy in a similar way.
