About Nicolas

I am a qualified teacher with a strong academic background in mathematics and extensive experience teaching GCSE and A-level students. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Gothenburg and a PGCE in Secondary Science, specialising in Physics, from the University of Chichester.

I currently teach A-level Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Core Maths at a sixth form in central London. Previously, I taught GCSE and A-level Physics, as well as A-level Computer Science, at a secondary school in West London. This experience across different subjects and examination boards gives me a thorough understanding of the UK curriculum, examination requirements and the challenges students face at different stages of their education.

My teaching experience also extends to university level. I have worked as a University Teaching Assistant, leading problem-solving classes and practical sessions in undergraduate mathematics and programming. I have also served on the board of a mathematics tutoring organisation, where I delivered revision lectures and helped make mathematics more accessible to students from different backgrounds.

I believe that effective teaching combines clear explanations, a supportive environment and a strong emphasis on understanding rather than memorisation. My approach is calm, patient and structured, with a focus on breaking down complex ideas into logical, manageable steps. I adapt my teaching to each student's needs, whether that means rebuilding confidence with foundational concepts or exploring more challenging problems in greater depth.

My background in mathematics, physics and computer science allows me to explain not only how methods work, but also why they work and how ideas connect across subjects. I aim to develop students' independent problem-solving skills and help them approach unfamiliar questions with confidence.

# MY TEACHING APPROACH

I am a friendly, patient and organised tutor who believes that effective learning comes from combining clear explanations, a strong understanding of fundamental concepts and purposeful practice. As a qualified teacher currently teaching A-level Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Core Maths at a sixth form in central London, I bring up-to-date classroom experience and a thorough understanding of UK examination requirements to my tutoring.

I aim to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and tackling challenging problems. My approach is adapted to each student's needs, whether they are working to strengthen their foundations, improve their examination performance or explore more advanced concepts.

# MY METHODOLOGY

My lessons are structured around each student's individual needs and goals.

I typically begin by assessing a student's existing understanding through targeted questions and problems. This helps identify strengths, misconceptions and gaps in knowledge, allowing us to focus on the areas where tuition will make the greatest difference.

When introducing or reviewing concepts, I use clear explanations, visual representations and carefully chosen worked examples. I place particular emphasis on understanding *why* methods work, rather than simply memorising procedures. We then progress from guided examples to increasingly independent and challenging questions, building both confidence and problem-solving ability.

For students preparing for examinations, lessons are closely aligned with their specification, whether AQA, Edexcel, OCR or the International Baccalaureate (IB). Alongside developing subject knowledge, I focus on exam technique, precise mathematical and scientific communication, interpreting questions and understanding what examiners are looking for.

I also incorporate regular review of previously covered topics to strengthen long-term retention. Where appropriate, I provide targeted homework and additional practice to consolidate learning between sessions.

# EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

# WHO THE LESSONS ARE FOR

I offer tuition across a range of subjects and levels:

- **Computer Science:** Secondary school, GCSE, IGCSE and A-level.
- **Primary enrichment:** I also welcome high-attaining primary school pupils who are interested in mathematics, science or computer science and are looking for additional challenges beyond the school curriculum. These lessons are tailored to each pupil's interests and abilities, encouraging curiosity, creativity and independent thinking through engaging problems, investigations and more advanced concepts.

I work with students across a wide range of abilities, from those needing additional support with foundational concepts to high-achieving students aiming for the top grades. Lessons are tailored to each student's starting point, interests and academic goals.

# LESSON LENGTH

Lessons typically last between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on the student's age, level and objectives.

A typical session combines review of previous learning, clear explanations of new concepts and carefully selected practice questions. I adapt the balance between teaching, guided practice and independent problem-solving to the student's needs.

Where beneficial, I also provide homework or suggested practice between sessions to reinforce learning and maintain progress.
