A Science-Informed Approach to Mathematics
Mathematics is often a subject that causes anxiety, but the underlying mechanics of how we acquire, process, and retain numerical concepts are universal. With 7 years of classroom and tutoring experience, my methodology is deeply rooted in the science of learning, combining educational psychology with the latest cognitive research to ensure every maths lesson is optimized for success.
My Teaching Methodology
My lessons are explicitly designed around how the brain processes numbers and logic:
Cognitive Development (Piaget): Drawing on Jean Piaget’s theories, I carefully scaffold lessons to match a student's cognitive stage. In mathematics, the transition from concrete arithmetic to abstract algebraic reasoning is a common stumbling block. I focus on building robust mental models (schemas), ensuring that complex formulas and theorems genuinely make sense rather than just being memorized.
Direct Instruction: I utilize the highly structured teaching models developed by Siegfried Engelmann. By breaking down complex mathematical operations into clear, unambiguous micro-steps, we eliminate confusion and accelerate understanding of the core mechanics.
Applied Cognitive Science: I actively manage cognitive load so a student's working memory is never overwhelmed by multi-step equations. I also embed retrieval practice and spaced repetition to transfer mathematical fluency into long-term memory—vital for retaining information for GCSE exams.
Formative Assessment & Active Tracking: I continuously check for understanding throughout every calculation, adapting my pacing in real-time. This active tracking allows us to pinpoint exact barriers (like a missed step in a foundational equation) and overcome them instantly.
What a Typical Session Looks Like
Active Recall: We begin by retrieving previous mathematical concepts to strengthen neural pathways and warm up the brain.
Targeted Instruction: Clear, step-by-step introduction of new formulas or methods, carefully aligned with the student's cognitive readiness.
Guided Practice: Working through equations collaboratively, using interactive technology to visualize the math.
Independent Application: The student solves problems independently while I monitor progress and provide immediate, constructive feedback.
