About Barbara

As a lifelong artist and former high school art teacher, I've taught private and group lessons since 1992, and my work has been featured in over twenty exhibitions throughout the United States. During the 1990's I focused on portraiture and sold many commissions. Later, I created and sold my independent work through small galleries, art guild exhibitions, on social media, and through my own fine art studio and gallery. My work has been purchased by collectors throughout the United States.

I am proficient in teaching and creating work including watercolor, acrylic painting, oil painting, drawing in various media, hand built ceramics and collage/assemblage. My favorite teaching experiences include nine years as the full-time art teacher at a private school, single and group lessons in my private studios in Huntsville, AL, and group lessons and workshops at the Huntsville Museum of Art.

I recently moved to Las Vegas, NV, and look forward to meeting students who are excited about visual arts as I am!

I've drawn and painted since I was a small child and even have tiny drawings from when I was two! My mother was my biggest fan and provided materials for me. I'm happiest when creating, whether alone or with my students. I especially love oil painting because of the smooth texture of the paint and vibrant colors, and collage/assemblage for the treasure hunting and construction aspects.

I began teaching in my home studio by request. This led to a semester-long substitute art teaching job in a public elementary school. While there, I was recruited to interview for the high school position. After I retired from the high school position, I resumed teaching in my studio/gallery and at the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, AL.

I am a lifelong artist with a BA in art, and nine years of private high school, teaching to state-based curriculum.

About the lesson

We begin with a question and answer session to determine the students needs. A student might need a state-based curriculum for home school, or want to learn a particular skill, or want to complete a project with help, or simply want to explore different media and techniques without investing a lot in supplies. Once the goal is determined, we discuss where the student is technically in order to decide which skills should be reviewed, if any, and which need to be learned and developed.

I have worked with student ages 6 to 60+! My favorite age group is in the 13-18 range, but I enjoy teaching anyone who is eager to learn! My last group, a block printing workshop at the museum, contained students from 20 to 60.

Art is about self-expression, so find someone who will allow you to express yourself while using good technique.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Make sure the teacher knows whether you desire to hone technical skills or want to play with the media (paint, clay, etc.) to see how it works. The teacher will then know how much to intervene in your process. Both ways are valid!

Also decide whether you want to work on one skill for a long period, for example different ways of drawing, or try different media in each session. This will help the teacher set up long and/or short lessons.

Private lesson in my home studio or in a group of 3 or more with provided venue:

$40 per person, per hour, supplies included for painting and drawing.

$40 per person, per hour for hand-built ceramics, supplies included.

$60 per two hour session.

Travel for private lessons to be negotiated depending on mileage.
