I believe humans are naturally designed to draw, perceptually, neurologically, muscularly, kinesthetically. However, many of us feel we can’t. Many assume they are missing something, talent, the right techniques, and the list goes on. Twenty years of experience have taught me that what hold us back are actually our very assumptions, our preconceptions about how drawings come about, what the steps are, what is behind being able to draw.

We create exercises to stop and transform those preconceptions so that students can begin experimenting freely without fear of failure. Once the process is underway, students quickly realize that growth as a drawer is dependent solely on breadth of experimentation and practice. Essentially, I demystify drawing so that students personally experience that progress in drawing is made through regular human scale efforts rather than through abilities available only to a select few.

Over the years it has been one of my biggest joys to help apprentices to find their way in the arts. Some young students had discovered their road to a professional pat; many others had found the pleasure of expression. In every case, it has been an adventure of mutual enrichment and learning.

About the lesson

Drawing lessons offered by Sofia are tailored to each student's needs and level. Lessons can also be held online. Lessons are also available in Salt Lake City. The first lesson is free to define learning goals and methodology.
