About Chris

Mathematics has always been a passion of mine and made to sense to me in my courses. Part of that success was my ability to draw comparisons between classes and apply it to real world situations. My goals are for my students to not only find math fun and exciting, but also to appreciate its usefulness in everyday life.

I am currently a Ph.D. candidate in Bioengineering at Clemson University and a teaching assistant for a senior level design course. Math is integral for both my research and teaching at some capacity so my understanding and use is very fresh. Also, I was a supplemental instruction leader in Calculus 2 for five semesters while an undergraduate. This involved preparing for out-of-class sessions for students about the material as well as instructing them on different types of learning strategies. Not one strategies works for every student, especially in math, so I have a variety of methods that I can employ and instill in future students. I want all of my students to exceed in math, whether on a specific topic or for a generalized understanding in their coursework!

I was a supplemental instruction leader for five semesters as an undergrad for Calculus 2. I thoroughly enjoyed that experience so I decided to become a teaching assistant within the bioengineering department at Clemson for their senior level design course.

I have a B.S. in bioengineering at Clemson University and am currently a Ph.D. candidate in bioengineering at Clemson University. Engineering requires a lot of math so I am very fresh in most types of math. Along with this, I was a supplemental instruction leader in Calculus 2 for five semesters during my time as an undergrad.

First, I want to build a trusting and comfortable relationship early with my students so that they know that whatever we work on will in fact help them with their goals. I want them to feel free to ask questions and trust that I'll answer them respectfully and honestly. Second, I like to understand their learning strategies/abilities and begin offering alternate methods to assist them in learning the material if they continue to struggle with a particular topic. Ultimately, they can carry these methods into other courses, even outside of math, so they can be independent critical thinkers. This will coincide with their goals, but also provide guidance for their future classes or future endeavors. Last, because I am there for them, I want them to be honest with me right away. For example, if something we're working on early isn't clicking with them entirely, I want them to tell me and we can adjust. I am here to support them, not for them to feel discouraged, I will be more than happy to adapt to them!

I've only worked with undergrads in the past, but I am capable to assist in all levels of math from high school to college levels.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I am a firm believer that flexibility and compassion are necessary from a teacher for a student to succeed. The student should be able to depend on the teacher to adjust accordingly to the needs of the student, while maintaining a high level of compassion for them. Inevitably, the teacher is there for the student, not the other way around, so students should feel comfortable and a mutual respect between the two!
