About Jacob

I am a recent graduate of the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University (ASU) with bachelor’s in both physics and astrophysics and a minor in mathematics. I have some informal tutoring experience helping fellow physics students in calculus and the intro physics courses at ASU. However, this would be my first official tutoring job.

I am confident I will be of help to students in many areas of Physics and Mathematics including Physics I and II (High School or College level), arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. I am hopeful that what I lack in teaching experience, I will make up for in my knowledge, patience, empathy of students struggles and passion for the subject matter.

My goal as a tutor is not only to help my students get the best grades possible but also give them an appreciation and deeper understanding of what they are learning. In addition, I want to increase their confidence and get them excited about learning in general.

If my students express interest, plans to continue in their math/physics studies and if time permits it: I will try to go above and beyond the class curriculum for the intro classes and give them a sneak peak of what they can look forward to in future classes. If they desire, I will do my best to give good explanations or mathematical derivations of where all the elusive equations they will be using come from. And I’ll explain the motivations behind concepts beyond what would be taught in an introductory class or textbook, in a simple down to earth fashion.

If this sounds scary, I don’t intend to make any course harder than it already is. This would merely be optional supplemental learning that is meant to give students more of an intuition of what their using comes from and what it means. I would not make the actual problem solving more difficult for my students, unless they desire more of a challenge.

I understand despite our best efforts assignments and tests can lead to stressful time crunches. If you are going through this, I will try my best to work around this and teach the bare essentials as efficiently as possible. However staying on top of things and sending me material to cover in our sessions early will make things easier for both of us and make you more likely to succeed. To make our tutoring sessions as productive as possible and save you money I would like to have an opportunity to prepare for our tutor sessions or review material when necessary.
