About Yvolanda

I consider myself a math wizard! Math has always been my all time favorite subject. As a math teacher, I encourage others to at least like math and to understand it by applying real life situations to math problems. This helps the students to be able to connect and relate math to themselves. If you like money and candy you can learn math with me!

I enjoy seeing the improvements students make over time and their confidence in themselves rise. Having that one on one time allows the student to be honest with themselves and gives them the opportunity to learn at their pace and within their style of learning, whether it be visual, orally, or hands on.

I have always been a teacher at heart, however my career path took me through retail management for 20 years before I came into the education field. I applied for a recruiter job at my current school and they immediately placed me in the classrooms and I have been there ever since and I love it!

I have been teaching middle school math for 4 years at Andrew J. Brown Academy. For the upcoming school year 2018-19 I will be focusing on 6 grade academics.

About the lesson

When i meet with the student for the first time i give them a chance to speak to me personally. I want to know what are their struggles, their goals, and the style they feel they learn the best with. I also request to see some of their past assignments and test along with their notes. This will allow me to assess exactly what I need to do to help them and give them suggestions if need be.

A session schedule would include:

1. A review of current class work

2. Work on math vocabulary, reteach current standard

3. Finish the session with an exit ticket to assess students understanding; grasp of the material

I work with all types of students on all different levels. In our school we have a lot of students who are below grade level that I work with and have mostly tested at grade level or above by the end of the school year. I also have some gifted students i work with and to help their enrichment I implemented an algebra class during our RTI time to help them reach their maximum potential.

Be honest and open with the teacher who you do hire so they can help you to your fullest potential. Look for profiles who express their enthusiasm in their answers. Anyone who loves what they do will perform well and make sure you do too!

Last school year as we prepared our students for ISTEP some of the math teachers were concerned that students were not getting a well rounded lesson to prepare for ISTEP. I worked with all 150 middle school students in small groups to give them that extra assistance for mastering missed standards. When we begin testing students eyes started to light up as what I had been working with them with was on the test. You could see their confidence go through the roof!! They all did very well on that test!!
